Many cities have a dedicated team of volunteers who walk the downtown streets and sidewalks in the early morning, searching for the unfortunate victims of buildings that are too-well lit and too-well windowed. Rochester now has its own fatal collision monitoring group, and they are eagerly seeking new volunteers. The Genesee Valley BirdMappers are encouraging everyone to get out and search glassy buildings in and around Rochester during migration, with a special emphasis on the Global Bird Rescue (GBR) event. GBR is an annual week-long community science initiative to collect data on window collisions during fall migration. This year’s GBR Event is the week of Sept. 30–Oct. 6.
