SUMMARY:Lakeshore Plains West
DESCRIPTION:A driving tour of the farm fields and open lands to the west of Rochester\, this trip will search for Horned Larks\, Snow Buntings\, Lapland Longspurs\, Northern Shrikes\, falcons (possible Merlin or Peregrine) and hawks (hoping for Rough-legged and Northern Harriers) in western Monroe and possibly into Orleans County. Dress warmly in layers; bring snacks (lunch if you wish to continue on into the early afternoon with us) and a thermos filled with a warm beverage. We will drive along backcountry roads for a few hours\, stopping where we see bird activity. No restrooms available until we reach Hamlin Beach SP. \nMeet at 9:00 a.m. at the Braddock Bay Park main parking lot. Use the East Manitou Road exit from the Ontario State Parkway. Plan on coordinating carpooling\, if possible\, as this is a driving tour. Fewer cars are better as we pull over on roads potentially with snow banks. Bring your own FRS radios and spotting scopes\, if you have them. \nLeader: Lynn Bergmeyer 585-576-0422 and co-leader Robert Buckert 585-269-4206 \n  \nRBA Field Trip Guidelines \nAll field trips go rain/snow or shine unless there is a travel advisory issued. Trips run approximately 2 to 4 hours. Bring binoculars. Wear weather appropriate clothing and sturdy shoes. Please arrive at the designated meeting location 10 minutes before the start time of the trip. Colds\, flu\, and COVID are still around–if you’re not feeling well\, please stay home. SUMMARY:***CANCELLED***Braddock Bay Hawk Lookout Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:The RBA is committed to following NYS guidelines and directives regarding social distancing and the COVID-19 pandemic. \nCurrently\, all field trips\, meetings\, and birds-and-brews through the end of April are cancelled\, and we anticipate canceling events in May and June as well. As the situation is dynamic\, we will continue to monitor conditions and make changes to our schedule as needed. Should the situation improve and Governor Cuomo lift restrictions on gathering sizes\, we may reinstate currently cancelled trips. Visiting the event posting on our website is the surest way to tell if an event has been cancelled. \nWhile we are not currently able to bird together during this difficult time\, we encourage everyone to keep birding on their own. To keep yourself and others safe\, we remind you to follow best practices for social distancing: \n\nStaying close to home minimizes your exposure\, as long drives require more stops at gas stations and communal restrooms.\nBird alone or with others from your household; do not go birding with friends.\nAvoid birding in highly trafficked areas. Instead of crowding into the Owl Woods or piling on the Hawkwatch Platform\, find somewhere less populated. Visit https://rochesterbird.wpengine.com/birding-hotspots-map/\nto find other spots to bird\nAvoid touching shared surfaces like railings and benches.\nStay six feet away from others\, even outdoors.\nDo not share scopes\, binoculars\, or field guides.\nCarry a small bottle of hand sanitizer or some alcohol wipes with you.\n\nEnjoy the fresh air and migrating birds as spring unfolds. The sooner we all do our part to not spread the virus\, the sooner we can all enjoy being together again. \nStay well and safe\, \nLiz Magnanti\nPresident\, RBA \n***CANCELLED***This trip is for the spring hawk flight and migrating songbirds.  This is a joint trip with the Buffalo Ornithological Society.  We will be working to identify distant raptors and meet some great new people\, too! \nMeet at 9:30 a.m. at the Braddock Bay Park main parking lot.  Use the East Manitou Road exit from the Ontario State Parkway.

SUMMARY:Bird of Prey Days and NEW! Birders' Gear & Optics Event
DESCRIPTION:Save the Date! Come celebrate Rochester’s Phenomenal Raptor Migration\n& Browse the Birders’ Gear & Optics Sales Event! \n(download flyer) \n  \nOn April 23-24\, Braddock Bay Raptor Research (BBBR) is hosting their popular and family-friendly Bird of Prey Days at Braddock Bay Park. This year\, RBA has teamed up with BBBR to co-host a special Birders’ Gear and Optics “tent” where birders will be able to browse through the latest in birding gear and birding optics. \nRepresentatives from Eagle Optics\, Phone Skope\, and our local Bird House retail shop will be present. \nEagle Optics is highly regarded by birders as THE online place to shop for quality birding optics and The Bird House is our local retail shop that deals in Vortex\, Nikon\, and other brands as well as bird feeders\, field guides\, and more. Phone Skope sells adaptors that allow birders to use smartphones and spotting scopes to photograph birds at great distances. \nThis special event will provide a unique opportunity for birders to talk with optics representatives about how to choose quality binoculars and spotting scopes\, to look through models at every price point\, to browse the latest birding gear\, AND to learn how to “digi-scope” with your smartphone. \nBird of Prey Days is a celebration of raptor migration and is held during the peak of spring hawk migration. In addition to featured presentations by raptor experts (Luke Tiller\, Darryl McGrath\, Paul Anderson\, and more)\, there will be live owls\, falconry demos\, kid-friendly activities\, and world-class hawk migration if the winds are right. Stop by the hawkwatch to learn what raptors migrate through this area and see them in action. \nWe are proud that Young Birders of Rochester will also be featured! They will introduce the RBA Young Birders program and answer questions from other young kids about birding in Rochester. \nWe hope to see you there! Bring a friend\, attend an early morning owl prowl\, man the hawkwatch\, watch a presentation\, and browse through the latest in birding gear and optics. \nDetails below or download flyer. \nWHAT: BIRD OF PREY DAYS hosted by Braddock Bay Raptor Research (BBBR) \nBIRDING GEAR & OPTICS EVENT co-hosted by BBBR and Rochester Birding Association \nWHEN: April 23-24\, 9 – 4 pm (owl prowls start earlier) \nWHERE: Braddock Bay Park on East Manitou Road in Greece \nFEE: $5/suggested per adult\, Kids are FREE! \nWEBSITE: http://www.bbrr.org/bird-of-prey-days/ \nEVENTS: (full schedule here) \nTOURS/WALKS—Saturday AND Sunday \n7:30 a.m.~ Early Morning Owl Prowl\n8:30 a.m.~ Song Bird Banding at\nBraddock Bay Bird Observatory\n9:30 a.m.~ Raptor Banding Station\n12:30 p.m.~ Raptor Banding Station \n
