SUMMARY:Woodcock Courtship Flight at Braddock Bay Bird Observatory Field Trip - Registration Opens April 2\, 2021
DESCRIPTION:This will be an evening trip for woodcock courtship flight.  If you’ve never seen this spectacle\, prepare to be amazed: birds call noisily from the ground in grassy fields before spiraling rapidly up high\, descending back down in a zigzagging noisy frenzy\, only to start the cycle anew.  An amazing sight!  Following the Woodcock display\, owl banding is a possibility at the banding station. Fields may be wet and muddy in spots. Boots are STRONGLY recommended.  Bring a flashlight or headlamp. Port-a-john available. \nWe will meet at 7:00 p.m. in the parking lot of Braddock Bay Bird Observatory\, 10 Braddocks Avenue\, Hilton\, NY 14468.  Take the Manitou Beach Road exit from Ontario State Parkway.  Turn north and follow Manitou Beach Road until it forks.  Take the left fork to the small dirt road (there is a sign for BBBO).  The parking lot is at the end of the dirt road. \nCOVID-19 Policies and Procedures \nDue to the novel coronavirus pandemic\, the Rochester Birding Association is instituting the following procedures for all field trips. By registering for this field trip\, you acknowledge that you have read and will abide by these policies. \nRegistration Policies: \n\nAdvance registration through Eventbrite is required in order to attend the trip. NYS guidelines for the allowable number of attendees at an outdoor gathering change frequently.  Exact capacity limits will be determined on a trip by trip basis\, and they may be subject to change.\nIndividuals who did not pre-register will not be allowed to attend the field trip.\nShould you decide not to attend the trip\, we encourage you to cancel your reservation to make room for others. Canceling is easily done through the Eventbrite website; see your confirmation email for details.\n\nHealth Screening Considerations: \n\nFull contact information is required at registration\, in case contact tracing is requested.\nNo one who has a temperature of 100.4F or greater (without having taken any fever-reducing medications) should attend.\nNo one who has any COVID-19 symptoms (fever\, cough\, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing\, chills\, muscle pain\, sore throat\, or loss of taste or smell) should attend.\nNo one who has tested positive for COVID-19 in the past 14 days or who has been instructed to self-isolate or quarantine should attend.\nNo one who has been in close (within 6 feet) or proximate (same closed environment\, but greater than 6 feet) contact with anyone who has tested positive for COVID-19 or who has had symptoms of COVID-19 within the past 14 days\, should attend.\nNo one who has traveled or who lives with someone who has traveled to a country or state on the New York coronavirus travel advisory list in the last 14 days should attend.\nParticipants who test positive for the coronavirus within 14 days after attending a field trip are encouraged to contact the RBA.\n\nSocial Distancing and Safety Best Practices \n\nParticipants will be required to stay 6 feet apart at all times and wear a mask whenever they are outside of their car.\nParticipants that reside in the same household may share binoculars or scopes\, but we regret that otherwise optics cannot be shared. We realize this may be frustrating for those who do not have their own spotting scopes. To the extent possible\, we will choose birding locations that do not require advanced optics.\nParticipants are encouraged to keep hand sanitizer with them in case of accidental contact.\n\nWaive and Release from Liability: By registering for this field trip you acknowledge that you assume all risks and hazards incidental to the activities of the event\, including potential exposure to the novel coronavirus. You further release\, absolve\, hold harmless\, defend and indemnify the Rochester Birding Association\, Inc. and all individually named organizers\, leaders\, and participants of the event. In case of injury\, you hereby waive all claims against all organizers\, leaders\, and participants. \nPhoto/Video Waiver: If you do not consent to have your image used by the RBA in the manner next described\, check the appropriate box on the registration form. Otherwise\, by registering for this field trip you hereby grant permission to the Rochester Birding Association to take and publish photos or videos of you in connection with the event listed above\, with or without your name and for any lawful purpose including for example such purposes as publicity\, illustration\, advertising\, and web content. \n

SUMMARY:***CANCELLED***Woodcock Courtship Flight at Braddock Bay Bird Observatory Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:The RBA is committed to following NYS guidelines and directives regarding social distancing and the COVID-19 pandemic. \nCurrently\, all field trips\, meetings\, and birds-and-brews through the end of April are cancelled\, and we anticipate canceling events in May and June as well. As the situation is dynamic\, we will continue to monitor conditions and make changes to our schedule as needed. Should the situation improve and Governor Cuomo lift restrictions on gathering sizes\, we may reinstate currently cancelled trips. Visiting the event posting on our website is the surest way to tell if an event has been cancelled. \nWhile we are not currently able to bird together during this difficult time\, we encourage everyone to keep birding on their own. To keep yourself and others safe\, we remind you to follow best practices for social distancing: \n\nStaying close to home minimizes your exposure\, as long drives require more stops at gas stations and communal restrooms.\nBird alone or with others from your household; do not go birding with friends.\nAvoid birding in highly trafficked areas. Instead of crowding into the Owl Woods or piling on the Hawkwatch Platform\, find somewhere less populated. Visit https://rochesterbird.wpengine.com/birding-hotspots-map/\nto find other spots to bird\nAvoid touching shared surfaces like railings and benches.\nStay six feet away from others\, even outdoors.\nDo not share scopes\, binoculars\, or field guides.\nCarry a small bottle of hand sanitizer or some alcohol wipes with you.\n\nEnjoy the fresh air and migrating birds as spring unfolds. The sooner we all do our part to not spread the virus\, the sooner we can all enjoy being together again. \nStay well and safe\, \nLiz Magnanti\nPresident\, RBA \n***CANCELLED***This will be an evening trip for woodcock courtship flight.  If you’ve never seen this spectacle\, prepare to be amazed: birds call noisily from the ground in grassy fields before spiraling rapidly up high\, descending back down in a zigzagging noisy frenzy\, only to start the cycle anew.  An amazing sight! \nFollowing the Woodcock display\, owl banding is a possibility at the banding station. \nFields may be wet and muddy in spots.  Boots are STRONGLY recommended.  Bring a flashlight or headlamp.

SUMMARY:RBA Young Birder Event: Christmas Bird Count for Kids
DESCRIPTION:Come help us count the birds that make their winter homes at Braddock Bay!\nFor 119 years\, adults have counted birds every winter as part of the annual Christmas Bird Count\, and now it’s time for kids to join the fun!  The Christmas Bird Count for Kids is a family-friendly bird-watching event that builds bird identification skills and contributes to scientific bird count data. \nThe adventure starts with a short indoor lesson to introduce the local birds and to practice using binoculars.  We’ll then head outdoors to count the birds! \nExperienced birders will lead small teams of kids (and their parents) on different routes through the Braddock Bay Bird Observatory and surrounding area (the Owl Woods\, Manitou Beach Preserve\, the West Spit\, and long the lakeshore)\, as we attempt to find as many birds and as many species as possible.  Each survey route will be 45-90 minutes\, depending on the weather\, and at the end all the teams will meet up to tally their birds and to compare their sightings. \nREGISTER NOW AT EVENTBRITE >>\nWho can come?\nWe welcome both beginning and advanced birders up to age 18\, but note that very young children may not be suited for this particular event. All children must be accompanied by an adult\, and registration is required. \nWhat to bring?\nPlease come prepared for the weather and bring binoculars and a field guide if you have them. Some additional binoculars and guides will be available for use at the event. We’ll have hot chocolate and light snacks on hand\, but help us save a tree by bringing your own mug! \nFussy details . . .\nWe’ll meet at Braddock Bay Bird Observatory\, located at 10 Braddocks Ave in Hilton. Take the Lake Ontario State Parkway to Manitou Beach Road\, and head towards the lake. Take a left on Braddocks Ave\, and follow it to a gravel driveway which leads to our parking lot. \nThis Christmas Bird Count for Kids is sponsored by the Rochester Birding Association and its Young Birders Program\, and by Braddock Bay Bird Observatory.  Thanks to all our volunteers for supporting this event! \nMore questions?
