SUMMARY:Beginner Trip: Lakeshore Warbler Hotspots
DESCRIPTION:Learn the basics of identifying our most colorful migrants on this trip\, which will stop at several areas where these birds tend to congregate in spring. We’ll be looking for color patterns\, song\, and the distinctive behaviors that enhance identification skills with these fast-moving beauties: several trails may be very muddy\, so boots are strongly recommended! \nMeet at the parking lot behind Lakeview Community Church\, 30 Long Pond Rd. in Greece (near Edgemere Dr.) at 7:30 a.m. \nNote: This is a field trip for beginners. New birders should feel free to join these trips regardless of experience level: bring binoculars if you have them\, and we will share our scopes. The pace & focus of Beginner Trips may not be satisfying for experienced birders. Our Beginner Trips focus on teaching identification skills\, learning new habitats\, and answering questions. Experienced birders are welcome but may be pressed into service as educators!

In addition to featured presentations by raptor experts (Luke Tiller\, Darryl McGrath\, Paul Anderson\, and more)\, there will be live owls\, falconry demos\, kid-friendly activities\, and world-class hawk migration if the winds are right. Stop by the hawkwatch to learn what raptors migrate through this area and see them in action. \nWe are proud that Young Birders of Rochester will also be featured! They will introduce the RBA Young Birders program and answer questions from other young kids about birding in Rochester. \nWe hope to see you there! SUMMARY:NOTE: April Date Change!! Bill Evans: Wind Energy & Birds in NY: Finding the Balance
DESCRIPTION:Bill will review the history of commercial wind energy in NY and efforts on the federal\, state\, NGO\, and grassroots levels to minimize avian impacts. He will then focus on the proposed Lighthouse Wind Energy Project\, 30 miles WNW of Rochester in the Towns of Somerset and Yates\, discussing why he thinks it will have the highest spring fatality rate of birds in North America and why the project would be a bad precedent for wind energy in New York. \nBill Evans is Executive Director of Old Bird Inc.\, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit focused on nocturnal bird migration research & education. He has studied nocturnal bird migration across the eastern U.S. for 30 years and co-authored the CD-ROM\, Flight Calls of Migratory Birds with Michael O’Brien. Bill’s expertise on nocturnal bird migration led him into active involvement mitigating avian fatalities at communications towers and wind turbines. Over the past 20 years he has carried out avian studies at numerous commercial wind projects\, but he has also critically reviewed and presented expert testimony in hearings regarding projects he believes would have high bird impacts. Bill’s research has been featured on PBS\, BBC\, NPR and in Science\, The New York Times and is included in the new documentary on songbirds called The Messenger. Bill is a member of the Tompkins County Environmental Management Council and lives with his wife and two kids in the highlands south of Ithaca.

SUMMARY:November: Robert Rice - "A Warbler in My Coffee? : Linking Conservation to the Market Place via Bird Friendly Certification"
DESCRIPTION:Neo-tropical migratory birds have shown some drastic population declines in recent decades\, evidence of a number of challenges they face during the entire migratory cycle. Landscape transformation leading to habitat change and/or destruction in much of Latin America ranks high as a factor in overwintering sites for these declines. A coffee technology that transforms traditional\, shade-grown holdings to treeless\, agrochemical-dependent ones is seen by many as one such factor that has eliminated viable\, quality habitat for both migrant and resident birds. \nA science-based certification program developed by researchers at the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center (SMBC)—“Bird Friendly Coffee”—underpins an initiative to educate coffee farmers\, roasters and consumers about the role that a diverse shade coffee system can play in providing sorely needed habitat for many migrant species. Dr.Rice will present the journey that SMBC researchers have taken in developing and expanding this innovative scheme that links conservation to the market place. \nA geographer by training\, Robert A. Rice joined the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center (SMBC) at the Smithsonian’s National Zoological Park in 1995\, concentrating on research and policy issues related to migratory bird habitat and conservation. Rice’s organizing of the “First Sustainable Coffee Congress” and the “First International Workshop on Sustainable Cocoa Growing” helped place the SMBC on the map as a dynamic research group capable of acting as a catalytic force around conservation\, agriculture\, and the market place. Themes of Rice’s research and policy efforts include how the management of tropical agroecosystems relates to ecological questions\, as well as the socioeconomic benefits derived from diverse agroforestry systems. Since coming to the SMBC\, he helped develop a set of science-based criteria for shade coffee\, a system shown through research to serve as viable avian habitat—resulting in the “Bird Friendly” certification program. Rice has organized numerous workshops in coffee regions to train inspectors in the assessment of shade coffee systems.  These efforts have placed the Bird  Friendly certification on more than 12 million pounds of organic coffees—bringing a habitat/biodiversity dimension to environmental certification.
