SUMMARY:RBA Shorebird Identification Workshop - Registration closed!
DESCRIPTION:Shorebirds migrate long distances and come through our regions in spring and fall.  They can be found on lake shores\, ponds and flooded fields annually.  They are usually very cooperative and can be viewed at close range.  But shorebird identification is a challenge for all birders because of their varied plumages\, sizes\, mixed flocks\, and timing of migration. \nThe RBA Shorebird Workshop\, led by Dominic Sherony\, will cover all the shorebirds that can be found in the Rochester area and will focus on how to look at shorebirds.  It is intended for beginner and intermediate birders who want to expand their knowledge of these amazing birds. \nIncludes a 3-hour workshop on August 13 followed by an instructor-led field trip to Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (date TBD\, carpooling recommended). \nRegistration required. Fee: $49. REGISTRATION CLOSED \nIndoor Classroom:  \nAugust 13\, 2016\n9 am to approximately 1 pm\nLakeview Community Church\n30 Long Pond Road\nGreece\, NY\n\nField Trips: Different species of shorebirds arrive to western NY in waves\, so each week has the potential to turn up new species. Attending all trips will allow you to gain more experience with most western NY shorebird species.\n\nPrivate Field Trip for classroom participants – Montezuma NWR\nLed by Dominic Sherony\nDate TBD\, but likely August 20th. \nPublic RBA Field Trips – Montezuma NWR\nLed by Dominic Sherony and Mike Tetlow\nDates: August 21 | September 11 | September 24 \n\nPREPARATION: Come prepared with your binoculars\, field guide\, pen\, notebook\, and a bag lunch. We will provide fruit\, snacks\, water\, coffee\, or tea. Restrooms are available. \nCANCELLATION POLICY: If you must cancel\, do us the favor of notifying us more than 48 hours before the event. We cannot refund any cancellations after that time.

SUMMARY:Bergen Swamp Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:A trip to this unique place is by special permit from the Bergen Swamp Preservation Society and will feature nesting birds. The mix of vegetation zones provides secluded nesting habitat for the usual western N.Y. species as well as those more characteristic of the Canadian zone such as Blue-headed Vireo\, Hermit Thrush\, Magnolia\, Blackburnian\, Black-and-white\, Canada\, and Nashville Warbler. \nThis is a walking trip of 2–5 miles on variably wet and slippery corduroy trails that must be followed closely for safety reasons and because of the fragile habitat. Sturdy boots (rather than sneakers) are STRONGLY recommended and hiking or ski poles may be useful.  Massasauga rattlesnakes are VERY rarely encountered. \nParking at the trail head is limited so we will meet in the parking lot of the 7-11 Gas Station at the junction of Routes 33 and 19 at 7:30 a.m. Drive about 20 miles west of Rochester on I-490 to exit 2. Turn right (west) on Route 33 and go about one mile to the junction with Route 19. Turn left into the parking lot.

SUMMARY:John W. Fitzpatrick\, Ph.D.: Birds Can Save The World - Sponsored by The Bird House in Pittsford & RBA
DESCRIPTION:In this illustrated lecture\, Dr. John W. Fitzpatrick will emphasize the vital roles that birds continue to play in fostering conservation of worldwide biological diversity. Most important\, birds represent our most accessible and sensitive indicators of environmental health and ecological change. Today\, thanks especially to the Internet\, individual citizens have unprecedented opportunity to generate essential population trend data at continental scales. Applying advanced data-mining techniques together with high-speed parallel processing has produced a genuine revolution in how we visualize and comprehend species distributions. As a result\, humans have crossed an historic threshold and now\, literally\, serve as worldwide biosphere sensors. The question is\, do we also have the will to self-correct? Birds present us with numerous motivations to do so\, and an excellent barometer for measuring our successes and failures. Dr. Fitzpatrick will suggest that both the rarest and the commonest birds teach us much about human nature\, environmental protection\, and our opportunities for saving not just species\, but also the great natural systems on planet Earth. \nDr. Fitzpatrick is a native of St. Paul\, Minnesota\, graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University in 1974\, and received his Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1978. Since 1995 he has been Director of the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology and professor in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Cornell University. Previously (1988-1995)\, he was Executive Director of Archbold Biological Station\, a private ecological research foundation in central Florida. From 1978 to 1989 he was Curator of Birds and Chairman of the Department of Zoology at Chicago’s Field Museum of Natural History. He is a Fellow of the American Ornithologists’ Union\, served as its President (2000-2002)\, and in 1985 received its highest research honor (Brewster Award) for his co-authored book Florida Scrub-Jay: Ecology and Demography of a Cooperative Breeding Bird. He has received numerous career awards for his work in science and conservation\, including The Nature Conservancy\, Linnaean Society of New York\, Environmental Advocates of New York\, and Audubon. \nFitzpatrick’s long-term research on the endangered Florida Scrub-Jay continues to the present\, and now spans 44 years. During the 1970s and ‘80s Fitzpatrick led numerous scientific expeditions to remote areas of South America\, especially the western Amazonian basin and the Andean foothills. Among his 150+ scientific articles and books\, he has published extensively on tropical American birds\, including original descriptions of 7 new bird species he discovered. He is co-author of the book Neotropical Birds: Ecology and Conservation\, and a principal author of the Handbook of Birds of the World\, volume 9. Fitzpatrick has been engaged in applying science to real‑world conservation issues throughout his career. In central Florida\, he helped design and implement a major network of ecological preserves and a new National Wildlife Refuge by engaging scientists\, public agencies\, non‑governmental organizations\, and private industry in the process. \nSince 1995 Fitzpatrick has helped grow the Cornell Lab into a global leader in bird study and biodiversity conservation\, and pioneered the development of Internet-based “citizen science” as a revolutionary tool for continent-scale bird monitoring. First author on the controversial 2005 announcement of rediscovery of an Ivory-billed Woodpecker in Arkansas\, he led search efforts to locate breeding pairs of this iconic bird of the southeastern North American swamp forests. He has served on national governing boards of The Nature Conservancy and the National Audubon Society\, on numerous professional and conservation panels\, and on three Endangered Species Recovery Teams. \nFitz has been a bird‑watcher since kindergarten\, and enjoys hiking\, watercolor painting\, fly-fishing\, golf\, and snow shoveling. He lives with his wife\, Molly (jewelry designer)\, on a beautiful hillside near Ithaca\, NY. John and Molly have a daughter\, Sarah (Cornell ’08\, PhD Colorado State\, ‘15)\, and a son\, Dylan (Middlebury ’11\, M.S. Carnegie Mellon\, ‘14).

SUMMARY:Cobbs Hill Park Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:With Spring in full swing\, come to one of Rochester’s best kept birding secrets: Cobbs Hill Park’s Washington Grove. Colorful warblers and other spring migrants arrive in masses to this urban oasis of tall stately trees. Pat Martin will demonstrate birding by ear as we stroll the quiet paths in search of Yellow-rumped Warbler\, Black-throated Blue and Black-throated Green Warbler\, Nashville\, Black-and-white\, and Hooded Warbler\, and\, if we are lucky\, the illusive Cerulean Warbler\, among others. We will likely hear the flute-like Wood Thrush and see Hermit Thrush searching the ground for food. Sparrows\, orioles\, and perhaps a Scarlet Tanager and a Barred Owl will make an appearance. Washington Grove is one of the best spring birding spots in the area. \nMeet at 8:00 AM in the grassy area between the road and the woods near the reservoir\, up the road from the entrance off Highland Avenue just east of Monroe.

SUMMARY:Beginner Trip: Lakeshore Warbler Hotspots
DESCRIPTION:Learn the basics of identifying our most colorful migrants on this trip\, which will stop at several areas where these birds tend to congregate in spring. We’ll be looking for color patterns\, song\, and the distinctive behaviors that enhance identification skills with these fast-moving beauties: several trails may be very muddy\, so boots are strongly recommended! \nMeet at the parking lot behind Lakeview Community Church\, 30 Long Pond Rd. in Greece (near Edgemere Dr.) at 7:30 a.m. \nNote: This is a field trip for beginners. New birders should feel free to join these trips regardless of experience level: bring binoculars if you have them\, and we will share our scopes. The pace & focus of Beginner Trips may not be satisfying for experienced birders. Our Beginner Trips focus on teaching identification skills\, learning new habitats\, and answering questions. Experienced birders are welcome but may be pressed into service as educators!

SUMMARY:Bird of Prey Days and NEW! Birders' Gear & Optics Event
DESCRIPTION:Save the Date! Come celebrate Rochester’s Phenomenal Raptor Migration\n& Browse the Birders’ Gear & Optics Sales Event! \n(download flyer) \n  \nOn April 23-24\, Braddock Bay Raptor Research (BBBR) is hosting their popular and family-friendly Bird of Prey Days at Braddock Bay Park. This year\, RBA has teamed up with BBBR to co-host a special Birders’ Gear and Optics “tent” where birders will be able to browse through the latest in birding gear and birding optics. \nRepresentatives from Eagle Optics\, Phone Skope\, and our local Bird House retail shop will be present. \nEagle Optics is highly regarded by birders as THE online place to shop for quality birding optics and The Bird House is our local retail shop that deals in Vortex\, Nikon\, and other brands as well as bird feeders\, field guides\, and more. Phone Skope sells adaptors that allow birders to use smartphones and spotting scopes to photograph birds at great distances. \nThis special event will provide a unique opportunity for birders to talk with optics representatives about how to choose quality binoculars and spotting scopes\, to look through models at every price point\, to browse the latest birding gear\, AND to learn how to “digi-scope” with your smartphone. \nBird of Prey Days is a celebration of raptor migration and is held during the peak of spring hawk migration. In addition to featured presentations by raptor experts (Luke Tiller\, Darryl McGrath\, Paul Anderson\, and more)\, there will be live owls\, falconry demos\, kid-friendly activities\, and world-class hawk migration if the winds are right. Stop by the hawkwatch to learn what raptors migrate through this area and see them in action. \nWe are proud that Young Birders of Rochester will also be featured! They will introduce the RBA Young Birders program and answer questions from other young kids about birding in Rochester. \nWe hope to see you there! Bring a friend\, attend an early morning owl prowl\, man the hawkwatch\, watch a presentation\, and browse through the latest in birding gear and optics. \nDetails below or download flyer. \nWHAT: BIRD OF PREY DAYS hosted by Braddock Bay Raptor Research (BBBR) \nBIRDING GEAR & OPTICS EVENT co-hosted by BBBR and Rochester Birding Association \nWHEN: April 23-24\, 9 – 4 pm (owl prowls start earlier) \nWHERE: Braddock Bay Park on East Manitou Road in Greece \nFEE: $5/suggested per adult\, Kids are FREE! \nWEBSITE: http://www.bbrr.org/bird-of-prey-days/ \nEVENTS: (full schedule here) \nTOURS/WALKS—Saturday AND Sunday \n7:30 a.m.~ Early Morning Owl Prowl\n8:30 a.m.~ Song Bird Banding at\nBraddock Bay Bird Observatory\n9:30 a.m.~ Raptor Banding Station\n12:30 p.m.~ Raptor Banding Station \n

SUMMARY:Trails at High Acres (Perinton Ponds Area) Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Over 130 bird species have been observed at HANA including more than 70 that nest in the diverse habitats found there. During this field trip we expect to see at least 40 species returning to nest or on their way to northern nesting grounds.  Our approximately two mile walk will explore about 250 acres at HANA and include some wet spots requiring ankle high waterproof shoes or boots. \nWe will meet at 8:00 a.m. at the parking lot on Perinton Parkway approximately 1/4 mile east of the Waste Management offices. Extra spotting scopes would be very helpful.
