SUMMARY:November: Stan Tekiela - Uncommon Facts About Common Birds
DESCRIPTION:Note the location change for this talk (see below). \nThis is a fun and entertaining talk presenting fascinating facts and tidbits about some of the birds that people love to hate along with some of the more common birds in our yard.  Stan will challenge your preconceived ideas about some common birds such as the European Starling\, the American Crow\, and much\, much more.  You will never look at these birds the same way ever again.  This talk wraps up with a message of conservation and understanding. \nThere will be a book signing after the talk; books will be available for purchase. \nNaturalist\, wildlife photographer and writer Stan Tekiela is the originator of the popular state-specific field guides such as Birds of (state name) Field Guide\, Wildflowers of (state name)\, and Trees of (state name). Over the past three decades Stan has authored more than 130 field guides\, nature appreciation books\, and wildlife audio CDs for nearly every state in the nation\, presenting many species of birds\, mammals\, reptiles and amphibians\, trees\, wildflowers\, and cacti. \nHolding a Bachelor of Science degree in Natural History from the University of Minnesota and as an active professional naturalist for more than 25 years\, Stan studies and photographs wildlife throughout the United States and has received various national and regional awards for his books and photographs. \nAlso a well-known columnist and radio personality\, his syndicated column appears in over 20 newspapers and his wildlife programs are broadcast on a number of Midwest radio stations. He is a member of the North American Nature Photography Association and Canon Professional Services along with many other professional organizations.

SUMMARY:September: Dominic Sherony - Those Amazing Birds!!!
DESCRIPTION:A look into the lives of selected bird families touching on a variety of subjects such as how they have adapted to a variety of habitats\, some that carry out unimaginable quests for food\, a contrast of birds that are colorful and others that are not\, and how their long past history is viewed today. Observing birds as living organisms has always interested Dominic Sherony. Through stories and a wide variety of sources\, Mr. Sherony hopes to give his audience a different perspective on birds\, perhaps one that will allow his listeners to see birds in different ways than they are accustomed. \nDominic Sherony was born and grew up in northern Illinois and attended University of Detroit and Illinois Institute of Technology\, completing degrees in Chemical Engineering. He worked for Xerox Corporation for 31 years after graduate school. He took up bird watching as a hobby in 1972 and has been an active birder since \, especially since his retirement. He leads local birding field trips\, was a region coordinator for the NYS Breeding Bird Atlas and volunteers at the Braddock Bay Bird Observatory. Dominic has written numerous papers about birds\, enjoys the challenge of photographing birds\, and occasionally give talks.

DESCRIPTION:A flat valley floodplain with rich marshes\, ponds\, and upland fields is cradled between steep-sloping forested hills. Abundant and diverse wildlife abound. We will explore this expansive wetland for Virginia Rail and Wood Duck families. We’ve seen eagles on a reliable basis\, Red-headed Woodpecker\, Cliff Swallow and more. \nMeet at Vitale Park on Route 20A in Lakeville at 7:30 a.m.  The park is between Nothnagle’s and the US Post Office on the south (lake side) of 20A. There’s a possibility of a trip extension to the Geneseo Airport area. Extra spotting scopes and FRS radios would be very helpful.
