SUMMARY:Hamlin Beach State Park Field Trip - Registration Opens October 2\, 2022 at 7:30pm
DESCRIPTION:We’ll start off walking flat wooded and brushy areas of the park\, looking for thrushes\, sparrows\, and maybe a half-hardy warbler or two. After that\, we’ll stop by the lake watch to view ducks on the water and in flight\, learning about the lake watch process. Dress appropriately for cooler weather along the lake\, and wear comfortable footwear. \nRestroom facilities are available. \nMeet at 8:00 a.m. in Hamlin Beach State Park\, Parking Lot 1. Spotting scopes would be very useful. \nRBA Guidelines for Field Trips  \nIn order to protect the health of our birders and the wider community\, and in order to ensure compliance with any NYS COVID-19 mandates that might be in effect\, the following policies and guidelines will govern our field trips for the foreseeable future. A Western New York native\, Andrew holds a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Biology from the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry and a PhD in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from the University of Connecticut. His research program stems from an interest in applied ecology—studying wildlife and applying that knowledge to key questions in conservation and management. SUMMARY:Batavia Wastewater Treatment Plant Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Why a wastewater treatment plant?  Open water and a great location mean that this spot appears regularly on fall birding lists.  We will drive on the banks of the ponds\, getting out wherever the birds are congregating.  Discover the great opportunity this spot (and its helpful staff) offers. \nRestrooms might be available at the plant offices. \nMeet at 9:00 a.m. at the wastewater treatment plant at the end of Industrial Blvd.\, which is off Pearl Street (Route 33) at the western edge of the city of Batavia.  From the NYS Thruway (I-90) at Batavia\, exit 48\, go south on Route 98 into the city of Batavia.  At the second light (candy store)\, make a right turn onto Oak Street\, which is Route 33.  Continue on Rt. 33 west approximately 0.5 miles to Industrial Blvd. and make a left.  Proceed south past the railroad tracks and straight up the hill and through the open gates to the entrance building of the treatment plant (first building on your left). \nOr\, from Rochester\, take I-490 W\, to Exit 2 (Route 33 west).  Follow Route 33 west through Batavia; turn left onto Oak Street (Route 33)\, stay right at roundabout\, continue on Route 33\, 0.5 miles to Industrial Blvd.\, turn left.  Continue straight across the railroad tracks and up the hill.  Turn left into the parking lot of the offices. \nIf COVID guidelines allow\, we will carpool from the plant offices. SUMMARY:November Meeting in Person & via Zoom with Speakers Amy Kahn & Kate Kremer - "We Birders Made a Difference! -- Lessons learned from a citizen action project working to make the Heritage Wind Project safer for birds"
DESCRIPTION:In 2007 The Rochester Birding Association (RBA) first published its position that it supports wind energy as an alternative to fossil fuel power generation\, provided that the facilities do not cause undue harm to nesting and migrating birds. Through our conservation committee we have been active in seeing that this happens by challenging wind projects to reduce the impacts on birds and habitat through better project siting. We will show an example of how citizens affected policy and that will result in a commercial project that has fewer impacts to the environment while still meeting their goal of increasing the green energy supply. \nAmy Kahn worked for 44 years as a professional ecologist\, environmental scientist and educator\, much of that time for the State of New York. She has served as Conservation Chair for Rochester Birding Association for 9 years and is a past RBA Vice President and President. She is dedicated to finding ways to produce green energy while preserving biodiversity. Amy received her MS in Environmental and Forest Ecology from SUNY CESF. She believes that individuals working together with others to affect positive change is the way we have a chance to succeed in passing this world on to future generations. \nKate Kremer is an RBA member and a founding member and Vice President of Save Ontario Shores (SOS).  SOS is a not for profit organization formed in 2015\, made up of Orleans and Niagara County residents who came together to explore local impacts of Lighthouse Wind\, a large scale industrial wind project proposed in the towns of Yates and Somerset on the shores of Lake Ontario.  She worked with other organizations to form the POWER coalition that opposed the siting of the Lighthouse Wind project in the Great Lakes shoreline migratory stopover region. She worked with RBA\, Genesee Valley Audubon and the American Bird Conservancy\, among other local groups\, to bring local voices and local expertise to several industrial wind siting cases. \nLook for the Zoom link in your email a few days prior to the meeting. SUMMARY:Niagara River
DESCRIPTION:The Niagara River area is famous for the variety and number of gulls in winter. Join us on our birding venture along the Niagara River in both the US and Canada (yes\, Canada!). We will start at Lake Ontario and work our way south to the Falls. Our focus will be on waterfowl and gulls\, including Bonaparte’s Gull and Little Gull\, with possible late migrating Common Tern\, with additional stops for Red-headed Woodpecker\, Black Vulture and late migrating passerines. This is a joint trip with the Buffalo Ornithological Society.\n\nMeet at 9:00 a.m. in large parking lot next to the swimming pool of Fort Niagara State Park Beach\, 1 Scott Avenue\, Rt 18F\, Youngstown\, NY.  Bring beverages and lunch for this is an all day trip.  We will be crossing into Canada (as of October 1\, 2022\, all COVID restrictions were dropped). DESCRIPTION:Migratory birds face increasing challenges as they cross hemispheres under the cover of darkness. Dr. Benjamin Van Doren will discuss recent advances in the science of monitoring and forecasting bird migration\, and how the BirdCast project at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology is bringing migration to the masses in an era of big data. Dr. Van Doren will also discuss how light pollution impacts migratory birds\, presenting recent insights into the drivers of urban bird collisions and how lights-out programs can make a difference. \nDr. Benjamin Van Doren studies the eco-evolutionary responses of migratory birds to environmental change. His research spans spatial and population scales and straddles ecology\, evolution\, behavior\, and conservation. Dr. Van Doren earned a PhD in Zoology from Oxford University\, and he has received achievement awards from the Linnean Society of London\, Zoological Society of London\, and the American Ornithological Society. As a Presidential Postdoctoral Fellow at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology\, he explores how climate change\, light pollution\, and human-dominated landscapes influence migratory bird ecology and behavior. \nLook for the Zoom link in your email a few days prior to the meeting. DESCRIPTION:In mature forest and scrubby areas we’ll look for overwintering resident birds\, lingering migrants such as Hermit Thrush and special winter visitors such as Evening and Pine Grosbeaks\, White-winged and Red Crossbills and Bohemian Waxwings. SUMMARY:Lakeshore Plains West
DESCRIPTION:Registration begins at 7:30 p.m. on January 22\, 2023\, and ends at 1:00 p.m. on January 28\, 2023. \nA driving tour of the farm fields and open lands to the west of Rochester\, this trip will search for Horned Larks\, Snow Buntings\, Lapland Longspurs\, Northern Shrikes\, falcons (possible Merlin or Peregrine) and hawks (hoping for Rough Legged and Northern Harriers) in western Monroe and possibly into Orleans County. Dress warmly in layers; bring snacks (lunch if you wish to continue on into the early afternoon with us) and a thermos filled with a warm beverage. \nWe will drive along back-country roads for a few hours\, stopping where we see bird activity. No restrooms available until we reach Hamlin Beach SP. \nMeet at 9:00 a.m. at the Braddock Bay Park main parking lot. Use the East Manitou Road exit from the Ontario State Parkway. Plan on coordinating carpooling\, if possible\, as this is a driving tour. Fewer cars are better as we pull over on roads potentially with snowbanks. DESCRIPTION:What does it take to create photographs that reveal the essential spirit of birds? For wildlife photographer Marie Read\, it means understanding and then capturing their behavior\, and in this presentation she’ll show you how it’s done. Marie will share the backstories to her compelling images of birds\, many of which appear in her best-selling book Mastering Bird Photography\, published by Rocky Nook in 2019. Whether you’re a bird watcher or an experienced photographer\, you’ll gain a wealth of tips to help you improve your own images. And you’ll learn that being observant\, understanding birds’ body language and taking your time contribute far more to getting great bird shots than having the newest camera and the biggest lens. \nWildlife photographer and author Marie Read has forged a career out of capturing special moments in birds’ lives\, creating images that combine beauty with impactful storytelling. Marie’s award-winning images are featured nationally and internationally in magazines\, books\, and calendars. Her articles and photo essays about bird behavior and bird photography have appeared in Living Bird\, Bird Watching\, Nature’s Best\, and Wild Planet\, among others. Her images have won awards in contests such as Share The View (Grand Prize Winner 2017)\, Nature’s Best\, North American Nature Photography Association Showcase\, Audubon Photography Awards\, and Festival de L’Oiseau. She has authored or co-authored several books about birds and their lives. We will then drive over to Summerville and Charlotte to see what might be in the Genesee River. If redpolls or winter finches are being seen\, we will stop at Durand-Eastman Park along the way. Flat walking on pavement. DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, March 9\, 2023\n7:00 p.m.\nAsbury First United Methodist Church\n1050 East Avenue \nJonathan Cohen\, Ph.D.\nAssociate Professor of Wildlife Ecology and Management\nSUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry \nThe federally endangered Piping Plover (Charadrius melodus)\, once common in the Great Lakes\, became extirpated from Lakes Ontario and Erie as of the early 1980s. At that time\, the Great Lakes-wide population had dropped to only 17 nesting pairs. Three decades of conservation efforts for the remnant population in the western Great Lakes pulled the species from the brink of extinction and has led to re-colonization of some eastern areas\, including Lake Ontario’s New York shoreline. New York has maintained one to two nesting pairs since its recolonization in 2015 despite many differences in habitat configuration from Michigan beaches\, where this species has maintained a stronghold. To help ensure that the species maintains its foothold in New York\, SUNY ESF has helped to lead partnerships among several federal\, state\, local and non-governmental organizations focused on monitoring\, research\, advocacy\, and nesting habitat restoration. These efforts have led to an increase in pair numbers\, fledglings\, and site use\, and in 2023 New York hosted three nesting pairs\, with individuals that we know have connections to nesting sites around the Great Lakes\, including the University of Minnesota’s captive rearing and release program. \nJonathan Cohen\, Ph.D. \nDr. Jonathan Cohen got his Ph.D. from Virginia Tech in 2005\, studying the breeding ecology of piping plovers on Long Island\, NY\, and he earned his master’s degree in 1998 from the University of Connecticut\, where he studied contaminant exposure to Greater Scaup in the Long Island Sound region. Dr. Cohen’s lab conducts research in support of conservation and management of wildlife\, with a focus on birds of conservation concern. His projects have included conservation of breeding Piping Plovers on the Atlantic Coast of New England and New Jersey\, the effect of human disturbance on Snowy Plovers in Florida\, Saltmarsh Sparrow nesting success in New York City\, the effectiveness of forestry practices at conserving songbird diversity in Pennsylvania\, and (his one mammal-focused project) habitat restoration for the New England cottontail. He has also been working actively with several partners to restore the Piping Plover to eastern Lake Ontario. \nLook for the Zoom link in your email a few days prior to the meeting. SUMMARY:Hamlin Beach State Park
DESCRIPTION:Registration begins at 7:30 p.m. on March 11\, 2023\, and ends at 1:00 p.m. on March 17\, 2023. \nWe will gather at Braddock Bay Park and drive to Hamlin Beach State Park where we will look for waterfowl. On the way there\, we will look through fields for migrant waterfowl (Snow or other rarely seen geese) and lingering winter field birds (Horned Larks\, Snow Buntings or Lapland Longspurs). We may stop at Owl Woods in search of migrating owls if they have been reported that morning. \nWe will end at the Braddock Bay Hawk Watch in hopes of spotting Rough-legged\, Red-shouldered Hawks\, and Bald Eagles. Dress warmly as we will be out of the cars often at multiple locations–the lakeshore can be cold this time of year. Trails are flat but can be muddy/snowy. Waterproof boots strongly recommended. SUMMARY:Beginner Birder Trip - Owl Woods & Hawk Watch Site
DESCRIPTION:Registration begins at 7:30 p.m. on March 18\, 2023\, and ends at 1:00 p.m. on March 24\, 2023. \nWe’ll look primarily for our smallest visiting owl\, the Northern Saw-whet\, which returns to this spot on a yearly basis. Long-eared Owls generally put in an appearance\, too\, although they’re quite shy and great at hiding. After the owl walk\, we’ll head to the Hawk Watch site to learn how to identify raptors on the wing. At this time of year\, we might witness spectacular flights of thousands of raptors!  The Owl Woods trails are flat and likely will be wet and muddy. Boots are strongly recommended – they’re almost mandatory! No restrooms available. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of California at Berkeley\, and his doctorate degree from the University of Maryland at College Park. Before joining the University of Rochester in 2020\, Al held faculty positions at San Francisco State University\, Syracuse University and the University of Miami. For over 25 years\, Al and his team have explored the ecology and evolution of biological diversity\, working in Australia\, New Guinea and the Solomon Islands\, as well as Ecuador\, Panama and Costa Rica.
