SUMMARY:November: Dr. Christopher Norment - "At the Edge of the Arctic: Ornithological Research in the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge\, Alaska"
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Christopher Norment will describe his experiences with ornithological fieldwork in the western part of the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge\, at the edge of the Bering Sea – one of the most important waterfowl breeding grounds in Alaska. He will speak of his work as part of a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service team working on annual studies of breeding bird nest productivity\, and will introduce the audience to a wild and beautiful landscape\, as well as to birds such as the Spectacled Eider\, Emperor Goose\, and Sabine’s Gull. \nChris Norment is a professor and chair of the Department of Environmental Science and Biology at the College at Brockport\, State University of New York\, where he specializes in the breeding biology\, ecology\, and conservation of migratory birds. In addition to numerous scientific articles\, he is the author of four books of creative nonfiction\, most of which seek to integrate personal narrative and lyrical descriptions of the natural world with the results of scientific research. His most recent book is Relicts of a Beautiful Sea: Survival\, Extinction\, and Conservation in a Desert World\, which is a meditation upon the wonder and tragedy of rare and endangered species. Set in the Death Valley region\, the book tells the stories of six rare desert species\, all of which are restricted to aquatic habitats: four types of pupfishes\, a toad\, and a salamander. The book uses their stories to illustrate the beauty of evolution and ecology\, and explore ethical and practical issues of conservation: just what are these species worth\, why are they rare\, and what would the cost of their extinctions be?

SUMMARY:October Speaker: Kimberly Sucy on Birding Japan
DESCRIPTION:Kimberly Sucy is a the Rochester Birding Association’s Field Trip Chairperson\, and enjoys nothing more than an outing to find new birds or enjoy familiar sightings.   She’s only been birding since around 2003\, after being enlisted into a major birding competition and forced to learn everything she could about passerines in a few short weeks.  Since then\, she’s focused primarily on New York State birds\, but has made multiple trips to Japan to see as much as she can of this wonderful country and its fascinating birds.  In her non-birding life\, Kimberly works in IT at a local hospital system\, geocaches\, plays Pokemon Go\, and plans field trips. \nWith a diversity of climates and habitats\, a wonderful public transportation system\, and ample amenities nationwide\, Japan is an ideal country to visit for birders who enjoy seeing new species and interesting endemics without suffering through the heat and species overload of many tropical trips.  Kimberly’s talk will include photos and anecdotes from the harsh conditions of northern Hokkaido to the sweltering heat of Japan’s southernmost outposts in Okinawa.  Throughout the length of the country\, she has encountered amazing bird life\, curious mammals\, intriguing customs\, delectable food\, and most of all a warm and welcoming populace that makes this country a dream destination for American visitors.

DESCRIPTION:RBA is collaborating with the Seneca Park Zoo Society to host a special speaker on Tuesday\, September 27\, on the RIT Campus (COLA Auditorium in the College of Liberal Arts). \n*** \nDrew Lanham is a birder\, hunter\, writer\, and profound thinker about man’s relationship to nature. In his twenty years as Clemson University faculty he’s worked to understand how forest management impacts wildlife and how human beings think about nature. In his teaching\, research\, and outreach roles\, Drew seeks to translate conservation science to make it relevant to others in ways that are evocative and understandable.  As a Black American he’s intrigued with how culture and ethnic prisms can bend perceptions of nature and its care.  Drew is also a widely published author and award-nominated poet\, writing about his experiences as a birder\, hunter and wild\, wandering soul. RBA president Laura Kammermeier describes Drew’s writing like this: “he chisels out words like a blacksmith on metal.” \nDrew’s talk is sponsored by the Zoo. \nDrew’s first solo work\, The Home Place-A Colored Man’s Love Affair with Nature\, was recently published.  By turns angry\, funny\, elegiac\, and heartbreaking\, The Home Place is a remarkable meditation on nature and belonging\, at once a deeply moving memoir and riveting exploration of the contradictions of black identity in the rural South—and in America today. \nDrew’s talk is titled:  “The Uncomfortable Elephant Bird of Color in the Room–Addressing the Coming Changes in Conservation.”  He discusses the future of conservation and the necessity to broaden the message beyond its current audience. \nPut this one on your calendar! \n\nTuesday\, September 27 at 7 pm\n RIT Campus – COLA Auditorium\, located in the College of Liberal Arts\nSponsored by Seneca Park Zoological Society and Rochester Institute of Technology. \n\n\nBooks available. DESCRIPTION:Shorebirds migrate long distances and come through our regions in spring and fall.  They can be found on lake shores\, ponds and flooded fields annually.  They are usually very cooperative and can be viewed at close range.  But shorebird identification is a challenge for all birders because of their varied plumages\, sizes\, mixed flocks\, and timing of migration. \nThe RBA Shorebird Workshop\, led by Dominic Sherony\, will cover all the shorebirds that can be found in the Rochester area and will focus on how to look at shorebirds.  It is intended for beginner and intermediate birders who want to expand their knowledge of these amazing birds. \nIncludes a 3-hour workshop on August 13 followed by an instructor-led field trip to Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (date TBD\, carpooling recommended). \nRegistration required. SUMMARY:Bergen Swamp Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:A trip to this unique place is by special permit from the Bergen Swamp Preservation Society and will feature nesting birds. The mix of vegetation zones provides secluded nesting habitat for the usual western N.Y. species as well as those more characteristic of the Canadian zone such as Blue-headed Vireo\, Hermit Thrush\, Magnolia\, Blackburnian\, Black-and-white\, Canada\, and Nashville Warbler. \nThis is a walking trip of 2–5 miles on variably wet and slippery corduroy trails that must be followed closely for safety reasons and because of the fragile habitat. Sturdy boots (rather than sneakers) are STRONGLY recommended and hiking or ski poles may be useful.  Massasauga rattlesnakes are VERY rarely encountered. \nParking at the trail head is limited so we will meet in the parking lot of the 7-11 Gas Station at the junction of Routes 33 and 19 at 7:30 a.m. Drive about 20 miles west of Rochester on I-490 to exit 2. Turn right (west) on Route 33 and go about one mile to the junction with Route 19. Turn left into the parking lot.

DESCRIPTION:Down the east side of the lake for a variety of nesting passerines\, especially warblers and vireos. There will be a short walk at the south end of the lake but mostly we’ll drive-and-park along the shore. \nMeet at the Rush Town Hall parking lot on the south west corner of E. Henrietta (Rt. 15A) and Rt. 251 (Rush-Mendon Rd) at 7:00 a.m.

SUMMARY:Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:We will search for Prothonotary Warbler\, Yellow-throated Vireo\, Cerulean Warbler\, and other nesting birds at this local natural treasure. We’ll drive to various spots in the Refuge and take an easy walk along one of the very scenic trails. \nMeet at 7:00 a.m. at the Sweden Corner Plaza in Brockport at the junction of Routes 31 and 19. It is advisable to bring water and snacks or a picnic lunch since there may be no local resources and the trip may last into the afternoon.
