DESCRIPTION:To make reservations\, contact Wanda Thistle by phone (236-1834) or e-mail Wanda Thistle to reserve a spot. \nPlease advise of the number of people coming\, whether or not you are also a member of Burroughs Audubon Nature Club (BANC)\, and the dish you will bring (appetizer\, salad\, or dessert). RBA will provide ice and charcoal if you want to grill. \nEach member should bring your own meat to grill\, your dish to pass\, your place setting (dishes & silverware)\, and your beverage. Bring tongs or a spatula for use with the grill. \nPlease carpool if you can because parking is very limited\, and don’t forget to bring binoculars for viewing birds! \nThe picnic is always informal and fun. The BANC facility is located in an ideal location to see birds. SUMMARY:Bergen Swamp Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:A trip to this unique place is by special permit from the Bergen Swamp Preservation Society and will feature nesting birds. The mix of vegetation zones provides secluded nesting habitat for the usual western N.Y. species as well as those more characteristic of the Canadian zone such as Blue-headed Vireo\, Hermit Thrush\, Magnolia\, Blackburnian\, Black-and-white\, Canada\, and Nashville Warbler. \nThis is a walking trip of 2–5 miles on variably wet and slippery corduroy trails that must be followed closely for safety reasons and because of the fragile habitat. Sturdy boots (rather than sneakers) are STRONGLY recommended and hiking or ski poles may be useful.  Massasauga rattlesnakes are VERY rarely encountered. \nParking at the trail head is limited so we will meet in the parking lot of the 7-11 Gas Station at the junction of Routes 33 and 19 at 7:30 a.m. Drive about 20 miles west of Rochester on I-490 to exit 2. Turn right (west) on Route 33 and go about one mile to the junction with Route 19. Then turn left into the parking lot.

SUMMARY:Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:We will search for Prothonotary Warbler\, Yellow-throated Vireo\, Cerulean Warbler\, and other nesting birds at this local natural treasure. We’ll drive to various spots in the Refuge and take an easy walk along one of the very scenic trails. \nMeet at 7:00 a.m. at the Sweden Corner Plaza in Brockport at the junction of Routes 31 and 19. It is advisable to bring water and snacks or a picnic lunch since there may be no local resources and the trip may last into the afternoon.

SUMMARY:Amy's Pond & Woodsmith -- Genesee Land Trust Conservation Easements Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:This is a field trip to the private property of Janet Smith for spring migrants\, early nesters\, and waterfowl. Two adjacent easements make up 187 acres that include two large ponds\, mature woodland\, and open fields all within 0.5 mi. of Lake Ontario. \nPast trips have yielded eagles\, bitterns\, soras\, many warblers\, Scarlet Tanager\, etc.\, etc.\, etc. We’ll walk along uneven trails\, so bring a walking stick if needed and prepare for a medium-long hike on excellent trails in an outstanding sanctuary open only by special arrangement — many thanks to GLT! \nMeet at Webster Park on the West corner of Holt and Lake Roads at 7:00 a.m.\, or at Amy’s Pond at 7:30 a.m. \nTo get to Amy’s Pond\, take Route 104 east to County Line Road. Drive north until it ends at Lake Road. Turn right and travel approximately one mile to 484 Lake Road\, Ontario\, N.Y. and turn down the long gravel driveway (on the south side of Lake Road) until you reach the marked parking area.

SUMMARY:May: Alexis VanWinkle - "Ornithology at Ganondagan State Historic Site"
DESCRIPTION:Come learn about the ornithological efforts happening at Ganondagan State Historic Site. Alexis will cover the different survey protocols used\, as well as the Environmental Field Team’s efforts to be designated as a New York State Bird Conservation Area. \nAlexis VanWinkle is the Supervising Conservation Steward\, Finger Lakes Environmental Field Team.  Alexis graduated from FLCC in 2014 with an associates in Natural Resources Conservation. She plans to graduate with a second associates in Environmental Science from FLCC May 2017. \nAlexis began working at Ganondagan as a Conservation Steward in 2013\, assisting with invasive species removal and helping write Ganondagan’s prescribed burn management plan. In 2014 she was hired on as a Supervising Conservation Steward for the Environmental Field Team to assist with prescribed burn and ornithological efforts. Currently Alexis is working on the Bird Conservation Area designation process for Ganondagan as well as implementing the first prescribed burn in the Finger Lakes Region with the Environmental Field Team. She plans to attend SUNY Brockport for Terrestrial and Aquatic Ecology in August 2017.

DESCRIPTION:The park has trails through a mixture of habitats attractive to spring migrants. At the end of the trip we will look for the Bald Eagle nest on the Bay. \nWe will meet at 8:30 a.m. in the Lucien Morin Parking lot off Empire Blvd in Penfield. SUMMARY:Ontario Pathways Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:We’ll look for warblers and other spring migrants along this level\, rails-to-trails pathway in Ontario County.  This well-maintained trail is an established favorite for wildlife viewing and scenic views. \nWear comfortable walking shoes and bring some cash for a great brunch at the Blue Ribbon after we walk!  At times\, the weather can be fickle\, but we’ve seen better warblers in the snow on this trip than many trips get on sunny days.  Please join us! \nMeet in the Bushnell’s Basin Park and Ride lot (off Route 96 just south of Exit 27 from I-490) at 7:00 a.m.  Carpool arrangements may be made before we commute to the trail area parking. \n

SUMMARY:Taylor Marsh Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:This is a new RBA field trip. Taylor Marsh is a preserve owned by the Bergen Swamp Preservation Society\, in Ontario County north of Honeoye Lake. It is best known for marsh birds\, including both local bittern and both local rail species. However\, the star attraction is the 2-3 Sandhill Crane that have been present in this area all year around for many years. They are occasionally heard at Taylor\, although seldom seen. Taylor also has brush-shrub and wooded upland habitat with a good variety of spring migrants and breeding birds. An adjacent hay field is home to bobolinks and meadowlarks. It has a checklist of well over 100 species\, and we usually rack up 40-50 in just a couple of hours. \nFrom Rochester\, take I-390 south to the Avon exit. Turn left onto Routes 5&20 and go east. In the town of Lima\, turn right onto Route 15 A and follow it south. Turn left and follow Richmond Mills Road (Livingston County Road 41) east. It becomes Ontario County Road 15. Follow the latter past County Road 37 and turn right at the next stop sign onto Allens Hill Road. (There is no road sign at the intersection.) \nMeet at the Taylor Marsh parking area on the west side of Allens Hill Road just south of Nighan Hill Road at 8:00 a.m.

DESCRIPTION:Thousand Acre Swamp is a preserve owned by the Nature Conservancy. It has a bird checklist of 120 species. This easy 2.5 mile walk goes through a variety of habitats\, resulting in a variety of breeding bird species and migrants. The habitats include swampy woods\, drier woods\, a marshy area\, meadows\, and a pond. \nShorter routes are possible. DESCRIPTION:With Spring in full swing\, come to one of Rochester’s best kept birding secrets: Cobbs Hill Park’s Washington Grove. Colorful warblers and other spring migrants arrive in masses to this urban oasis of tall stately trees. Pat Martin will demonstrate birding by ear as we stroll the quiet paths in search of Yellow-rumped Warbler\, Black-throated Blue and Black-throated Green Warbler\, Nashville\, Black-and-white\, and Hooded Warbler\, and\, if we are lucky\, the elusive Cerulean Warbler\, among others. We will likely hear the flute-like Wood Thrush and see Hermit Thrush searching the ground for food. Sparrows\, orioles\, and perhaps a Scarlet Tanager and a Barred Owl will make an appearance. Washington Grove is one of the best spring birding spots in the area. \nMeet at 8:00 AM in the grassy area between the road and the woods near the reservoir\, up the road from the entrance off Highland Avenue just east of Monroe.

SUMMARY:Trails at High Acres (Perinton Ponds Area) Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Over 130 bird species have been observed at HANA including more than 70 that nest in the diverse habitats found there. During this field trip we expect to see at least 40 species returning to nest or on their way to northern nesting grounds.  Our approximately two mile walk will explore about 250 acres at HANA and include some wet spots requiring ankle high waterproof shoes or boots. \nWe will meet at 8:00 a.m. at the parking lot on Perinton Parkway approximately 1/4 mile east of the Waste Management offices. Extra spotting scopes would be very helpful.

SUMMARY:April: Dr. Susan Smith Pagano - "Plantings for Migratory Bird Habitat\, Creating a Bird Friendly Yard"
DESCRIPTION:Arrowwood Virburnum \nFruits are an important dietary component for many songbirds during autumn migration. However\, not all fruits are created equal in terms of their nutritional quality. Dr. Susan Smith Pagano will summarize her ongoing research on the nutritional properties of fruits from local native and exotic plants\, and she will also discuss the importance of planting or maintaining appropriate fruiting shrubs in support of migrating birds. \nDr. Susan Smith Pagano is an Associate Professor of Biology at Rochester Institute for Technology. Dr. Pagano is a physiological ecologist who studies the dynamic relationships between fuel utilization\, physiological condition and diet quality in migrating songbirds at stopover sites. Recent work has focused on an assessment of refueling physiology and diet in Catharus thrushes migrating through the Braddock Bay area\, and outcomes of the work have been used to inform habitat management and conservation. In addition to her work at RIT\, Dr. Pagano is a Research Associate affiliated with the Braddock Bay Bird Observatory and is Vice-President of the Board of Directors.  She is actively involved in professional service and serves on two journal Editorial Boards and is an elected Council member for the Wilson Ornithological Society. \nDr Susan Pagano

SUMMARY:RBA March 9 Meeting - Greg Lawrence - Grassland Birds
DESCRIPTION:Grassland birds have declined more than any other suite of birds in the Northeast over the past 40 years. Management agencies and conservation groups have now identified grassland bird management and conservation as a priority. Greg will discuss the history of grassland breeding birds and their habitats in New York State\, as well as their management and conservation. He will provide an overview of grassland bird research and expand upon his own research on grassland birds in the state. He also will discuss future directions and controversies for grassland bird conservation in the region. \n \nGreg Lawrence is a graduate student at SUNY Brockport studying grassland community ecology\, with a focus on grassland breeding bird management and conservation. He currently works for Ecology & Environment\, Inc.\, and has previously worked as a grassland bird technician with the NYS DEC\, and on multiple research grants/projects at SUNY Brockport. He also serves on the board of the New York State Ornithological Association and Bergen Swamp Preservation Society. He has been an active birder in the area and member of the Rochester Birding Association since 2005\, starting as a young birder. He has led numerous field trips and given two previous talks for RBA.

SUMMARY:Beginner Birder Trip:  Charlotte\, Braddock Bay\, and Lakeshore Fields
DESCRIPTION:Warmer weather is on its way and with it\, bird activity picks up. We’ll check water for ducks\, fields for inland birds\, and watch the skies for raptors as well. \nMeet at 8:30 a.m. at Ontario Beach Park in Charlotte in the north-east corner of the parking lot beside the Genesee River outlet. Extra spotting scopes would be very helpful. \nNote: This is a field trip for beginners. New birders should feel free to join these trips regardless of experience level: bring binoculars if you have them\, and we will share our scopes. The pace & focus of Beginner Trips may not be satisfying for experienced birders. Our Beginner Trips focus on teaching identification skills\, learning new habitats\, and answering questions. Experienced birders are welcome but may be pressed into service as educators!

SUMMARY:February:  "Women Ornithologists of the Late 1800s through Early 1900s" - Kevin Griffith
DESCRIPTION:Did you know it was women who brought the love of the study of birds to everyday people? Come to the February 9th meeting to hear Kevin Griffith\, long-time local birder and teacher\, tell us about the important role that women of the late 1800s and early 1900s played in bringing ornithology to all of us. \nKevin Griffith has been birding in the Rochester area for 40 years.  He was the Region 2 Field editor for the New York State Ornithological Association for 25 years and is presently serving on the Board of Directors. His column “Birds Afield” appeared in the Democrat and Chronicle/Times Union for a number of years. He has been a co-operator with the US Fish and Wildlife Service as a bander for over 25 years.  He has led many field trips and has been a birding tour leader and has visited many birding locations around the country.  He is an experienced educator and taught in the Greece Central School District for 34 years.  He is past president of the Genesee Valley Audubon Society\, past vice-president of the Genesee Ornithological Society and has served on the Board of Directors for the Rochester Birding Association as well as our field editor.
