SUMMARY:Young Birder Event: Hamlin Beach Lakewatch
DESCRIPTION:Dust off your scopes\, because this month we’re going on a lakewatch! Join us as we work with local expert Andy Guthrie to find migrating waterfowl\, gulls\, and passerines at Hamlin Beach State Park. \nWe’ll start by looking out over the lake for waterfowl and gulls. New birders can get fantastic looks at ducks in the water\, and more experienced birders will find it a fun challenge to identify the fly-bys. Whether you can’t tell the difference between a duck and a goose\, want to learn the difference between the different scoters\, or are interested in scanning the horizon for the elusive jaegers\, this trip has something for everyone! \nAs we’re scanning the water\, we’ll also be watching and listening for passerines overhead. Flocks of winter birds – Horned Lark\, Snow Buntings\, Lapland Longspurs\, and a mix of finches are a welcome noisy distraction. If the lake is slow\, we may take a walk through the trails at Hamlin Beach looking for lingering migrants and newly arriving wintering passerines. \nWe’ll meet at 8:00 AM in Parking Area 4. Binoculars are helpful and we’ll definitely be using scopes\, but birders without scopes will be happy to know that our experienced crew is good about sharing. The event is free and open to any kids (and their parents) interested in birding. DESCRIPTION:By the time Foster E.L. Beal died in 1916\, the eminent ornithologist had poked through the stomachs of more than 37\,000 birds\, trying to decipher by their diets which were “good” and which were “bad.”  More than a century later\, we’re still making economic arguments for why birds matter — and writer and researcher Scott Weidensaul is tired of it. \nJoin Weidensaul to learn why\, more than ever\, birds — which circle the globe in astounding migrations\, which fill the world with color and song and vivid life — matter. Period. \nScott Weidensaul is the author of more than two dozen books on natural history\, including the Pulitzer Prize finalist “Living on the Wind\,” about bird migration\, “Return to Wild America\,” and “The First Frontier: The Forgotten History of Struggle\, Savagery and Endurance in Early America.” His newest book\, “The Peterson Reference Guide to Owls of North America and the Caribbean\,” has just been published. Weidensaul is a contributing editor for Audubon\, a columnist for Bird Watcher’s Digest and writes for a variety of other publications; he lives in the mountains of eastern Pennsylvania\, where he studies the migration of owls and hummingbirds. \n  \n

SUMMARY:September:  Dominic Sherony - "An Overview of Hawaiian Birds"
DESCRIPTION:Come hear an interesting and educational talk about Hawaiian birds by a long-time birder and RBAer\, Dominic Sherony. Not a travelog\, although there will be some great photos\, we will learn about the history of a number of Hawaiian birds\, both endemics and introduced species–just in time to make your plans for winter vacations! \nRecently\, the ABA has added the birds of the Hawaiian Islands to its “ABA List”. This might encourage more birders to develop an interest in this distant island chain. The birds and plants of Hawaii are remarkable and the birds have adapted to the unusual plant communities.  \nIn approaching the subject of the birds as an overview\, three main subjects will be covered: the origins and history of the endemic birds and the relationship between the honeycreepers to their environment\, the reasons why different bird species were introduced into Hawaii and their historical success\, and finally a brief look at the breeding seabirds and wintering shorebirds of Hawaii. \nDominic Sherony was born and grew up in northern Illinois and attended University of Detroit and Illinois Institute of Technology\, completing degrees in Chemical Engineering.  He worked for Xerox Corporation for 31 years after graduate school. In that period\, Dominic took up bird watching as a hobby in 1972 and has been an active birder since\, especially after his retirement.  Dominic has many and varied interests in birding including leading local trips.  He was a member of the New York State Avian Records Committee for eleven years\, and was a region co-coordinator for the NYS breeding bird atlas. Dominic has written numerous papers about birds\, volunteers at a Braddock Bay Bird Observatory\,  enjoys the challenge of photographing birds\, and occasionally give talks. \n

DESCRIPTION:We’ll be looking for shorebirds\, warblers\, and other fall migrants in Greece and environs. George W. Badgerow Park is a small area that offers good vantage points along pleasant trails\, with the occasional surprise rarity.  We’ll look for gulls in many plumages and some shorebirds\, too.  \nMeet at 8:00 a.m. at Ontario Beach Park in Charlotte in the northeast corner of the parking lot\, beside the Genesee River outlet.  Extra spotting scopes would be very helpful.\n \nNote: This is a field trip for beginners. New birders should feel free to join these trips regardless of experience level: bring binoculars if you have them\, and we will share our scopes. The pace & focus of Beginner Trips may not be satisfying for experienced birders. Our Beginner Trips focus on teaching identification skills\, learning new habitats\, and answering questions. Experienced birders are welcome but may be pressed into service as educators!

DESCRIPTION:Explore this expansive wetland for Virginia Rail and Wood Duck families. We’ve seen eagles on a reliable basis\, Red-headed Woodpecker\, Cliff Swallow\, and more. \nMeet at Vitale Park on Route 20A in Lakeville at 7:30 a.m. The park is between Nothnagle’s and the US Post Office on the south (lake side) of 20A. DESCRIPTION:Travel throughout the diverse landscapes of Northern Allegany County\, 20 minutes south of Letchworth State Park.  Grassland\, woodland\, pond and swampland species such as Prairie and Mourning Warbler\, bluebirds\, Pied-billed Grebe\, and maybe a bittern or 2 should be seen: this trip generally goes all day so we can see as much as possible! \nMeet at the former Border’s Bookstore on Hylan Drive (across from Marketplace Mall) at 6:30 a.m. where possible car pool arrangements can be made\, or at ShurFine in Nunda on Rt. 408 at 7:30 a.m. \nLunch at Barnhart’s camp is a trip tradition.  Bring a dish to pass – your choice–but this is optional.

SUMMARY:Bergen Swamp Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:A trip to this unique place is by special permit from the Bergen Swamp Preservation Society and will feature nesting birds. The mix of vegetation zones provides secluded nesting habitat for the usual western N.Y. species as well as those more characteristic of the Canadian zone such as Blue-headed Vireo\, Hermit Thrush\, Magnolia\, Blackburnian\, Black-and-white\, Canada\, and Nashville Warbler. \nThis is a walking trip of 2–5 miles on variably wet and slippery corduroy trails that must be followed closely for safety reasons and because of the fragile habitat. Sturdy boots (rather than sneakers) are STRONGLY recommended and hiking or ski poles may be useful.  Massasauga rattlesnakes are VERY rarely encountered. \nParking at the trail head is limited so we will meet in the parking lot of the 7-11 Gas Station at the junction of Routes 33 and 19 at 7:30 a.m. Drive about 20 miles west of Rochester on I-490 to exit 2. Turn right (west) on Route 33 and go about one mile to the junction with Route 19. Then turn left into the parking lot.

Two adjacent easements make up 187 acres that include two large ponds\, mature woodland\, and open fields all within 0.5 mi. of Lake Ontario. \nPast trips have yielded eagles\, bitterns\, soras\, many warblers\, Scarlet Tanager\, etc.\, etc.\, etc. We’ll walk along uneven trails\, so bring a walking stick if needed and prepare for a medium-long hike on excellent trails in an outstanding sanctuary open only by special arrangement — many thanks to GLT! \nMeet at Webster Park on the West corner of Holt and Lake Roads at 7:00 a.m.\, or at Amy’s Pond at 7:30 a.m. \nTo get to Amy’s Pond\, take Route 104 east to County Line Road. DESCRIPTION:Come learn about the ornithological efforts happening at Ganondagan State Historic Site. Alexis will cover the different survey protocols used\, as well as the Environmental Field Team’s efforts to be designated as a New York State Bird Conservation Area. \nAlexis VanWinkle is the Supervising Conservation Steward\, Finger Lakes Environmental Field Team.  Alexis graduated from FLCC in 2014 with an associates in Natural Resources Conservation. She plans to graduate with a second associates in Environmental Science from FLCC May 2017. \nAlexis began working at Ganondagan as a Conservation Steward in 2013\, assisting with invasive species removal and helping write Ganondagan’s prescribed burn management plan. In 2014 she was hired on as a Supervising Conservation Steward for the Environmental Field Team to assist with prescribed burn and ornithological efforts. Currently Alexis is working on the Bird Conservation Area designation process for Ganondagan as well as implementing the first prescribed burn in the Finger Lakes Region with the Environmental Field Team. She plans to attend SUNY Brockport for Terrestrial and Aquatic Ecology in August 2017.

SUMMARY:Taylor Marsh Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:This is a new RBA field trip. Taylor Marsh is a preserve owned by the Bergen Swamp Preservation Society\, in Ontario County north of Honeoye Lake. It is best known for marsh birds\, including both local bittern and both local rail species. However\, the star attraction is the 2-3 Sandhill Crane that have been present in this area all year around for many years. They are occasionally heard at Taylor\, although seldom seen. Taylor also has brush-shrub and wooded upland habitat with a good variety of spring migrants and breeding birds. An adjacent hay field is home to bobolinks and meadowlarks. It has a checklist of well over 100 species\, and we usually rack up 40-50 in just a couple of hours. \nFrom Rochester\, take I-390 south to the Avon exit. Turn left onto Routes 5&20 and go east. In the town of Lima\, turn right onto Route 15 A and follow it south. Turn left and follow Richmond Mills Road (Livingston County Road 41) east. It becomes Ontario County Road 15. Follow the latter past County Road 37 and turn right at the next stop sign onto Allens Hill Road. (There is no road sign at the intersection.) \nMeet at the Taylor Marsh parking area on the west side of Allens Hill Road just south of Nighan Hill Road at 8:00 a.m.

SUMMARY:Thousand Acre Swamp Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Thousand Acre Swamp is a preserve owned by the Nature Conservancy. It has a bird checklist of 120 species. This easy 2.5 mile walk goes through a variety of habitats\, resulting in a variety of breeding bird species and migrants. The habitats include swampy woods\, drier woods\, a marshy area\, meadows\, and a pond. \nShorter routes are possible. The entrance and parking lot are on the west side of Jackson Road opposite Penfield Center Road in Penfield.
