DESCRIPTION:Birds are fascinating to watch\, and not just because they are beautiful. Did you ever see a bird do something funny and ask yourself\, “Now why did that bird do that?” Understanding bird behavior can be tricky\, but Kevin will provide us with a framework to help comprehend and appreciate why birds do the things they do. Birds aren’t tiny little flying people\, and they don’t have the same needs and motivations that we do. But\, the way they accomplish their own goals can be amazing. Can you think like a bird? \nKevin J. McGowan Ph.D.\, Cornell Lab of Ornithology \nKevin is a professional ornithologist and avid birder. He is currently the project manager for Distance Learning in Bird Biology in the Education program at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. He is the author and instructor for the courses “Ornithology: Comprehensive Bird Biology\,”  “Investigating Behavior: Courtship and Rivalry in Birds\,” “Think Like a Bird: Understanding Bird Behavior\,” and the Be a Better Birder series of courses and webinars on bird identification\, offered through the Lab’s Bird Academy website. \nKevin was the co-editor and primary author for the book\, The Second Atlas of Breeding Birds in New York State\, one of the creators of the Cornell Lab’s All About Birds website\, and the former curator of the bird and mammal collections at the Cornell University Museum of Vertebrates. \nKevin received his Ph.D. in Biology from the University of South Florida\, studying the social development of young Florida Scrub-Jays. He has studied the behavior and biology of the American Crow in central New York for 30 years. He has followed the life stories of more than 2\,500 individual crows\, some for over 19 years. \nKevin is a Fellow of the American Ornithological Society\, a former Secretary of the Ornithological Societies of North America\, a past president of the New York State Ornithological Association\, and a former member of New York State Avian Records Committee. \nKevin enjoys all aspects of birds (especially crows)\, from behavior to functional anatomy\, and from ecology to evolution.  He is interested in spreading the appreciation of birds to all possible audiences\, through all possible avenues. \n

DESCRIPTION:Why a wastewater treatment plant? Open water and a great location mean that this spot appears regularly on the fall birding birding lists. We will drive on the banks of the ponds\, getting out wherever the birds are congregating. Learn how to navigate the terrain (all driving) and discover the great opportunity this spot (and its helpful staff) offers. \nWe will carpool. Meet at the parking lot of the 7-11 Gas Station at the junction of Routes 33 and 19 at 9:00 a.m. Drive about 20 miles west of Rochester on I-490 to Exit 2. Turn right (west) on Route 33 and go about one mile to the junction with Route 19. Turn left (south) and then immediately left into the parking lot of the gas station.  We will carpool as much as possible from there.

SUMMARY:October:  Kyle Horton - "Using Radar to Quantify and Forecast Migratory Patterns"
DESCRIPTION:The notion of hundreds of millions\, if not billions\, of migratory birds passing in and out of broad geographic areas is of considerable public and ecological interest – and of conservation concern. Capturing and quantify these large-scale movements has remained a principle challenge. Kyle Horton\, Cornell Lab of Ornithology Postdoctoral Fellow\, will discuss how he uses weather surveillance radar to quantify and forecast migratory movements across the United States. \nKyle Horton received his B.S. in Biology from Canisius College in 2011\, M.S. in Wildlife Ecology from the University of Delaware in 2013\, and Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from the University of Oklahoma in 2017. He is currently a Rose Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. His work on migratory birds employs a range of tools and approaches\, including the use of radar\, acoustics\, and citizen science data. He is currently working on understanding avian flight strategies\, long-term phenological change\, population estimates\, the impact of artificial light\, and migration forecasting.

SUMMARY:New York State Ornithological Association 71st Annual Meeting – 2018
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Burroughs Audubon Nature Club & Rochester Birding Association\nOctober 5 – 7\, 2018 in Henrietta\, NY (a suburb of Rochester) \nFor last-minute registrations\, email chitamckinneynysoa@gmail.com\nThe 71st annual meeting of the New York State Ornithological Association (NYSOA) will be held October 5 – 7\, 2018 in Henrietta\, New York. This meeting will be hosted by the Burroughs Audubon Nature Club (BANC) and the Rochester Birding Association (RBA). This will be the 70th anniversary of the first meeting of the organization\, formerly called the Federation of New York State Bird Clubs\, which was held in Rochester in 1948\, with each following 10th anniversary meeting since also held here. \nThe meeting and associated activities will be centered at the RIT Inn and Conference Center\, 5257 West Henrietta Road\, Henrietta\, NY 14467. This location has abundant space for our inside activities and easy access to the Thruway and interstate highways for travel to nearby birding spots. While we do not have specific highlight species\, we do have access to both Lake Ontario\, several of the Finger Lakes\, and to a large number of parks. The meeting dates will be in the midst of the fall migration for both water and land birds. \nThe weekend meeting will include Friday afternoon field trips for early arrivals and a reception and buffet followed by two workshops run twice and in parallel on Friday night. Then field trips on Saturday morning\, with shorter ones for delegates\, who will then attend the annual delegate’s meeting\, followed by a papers session in the afternoon and a banquet and speaker in the evening. Sunday morning will bring more field trips\, with several planned along routes toward attendees’ home cities. Friday and Saturday afternoons will also provide an opportunity to visit vendors and other exhibits while meeting with birding friends. We are looking forward to seeing you at the meeting. \nSaturday Night Banquet Speaker: Greg Miller\nA Big Year: Life After\n \nThe banquet speaker will be Greg Miller of The Big Year book and movie fame. This is the 20th anniversary of Greg’s Big Year. He will approach the subject from the viewpoint of what followed from his adventures: the book\, the movie\, and his future involvement in birding. He was able to spend time on the movie set interacting with Jack Black (who played him)\, Steve Martin\, and Owen Wilson and serving as Bird Consultant to the movie. He has become an advocate of bringing birding to as many people as possible through talks and leading tours. He has a special interest in encouraging young birders. \nGreg is one of the three birders whose competitive Big Years in 1998 became the basis for the Pulitzer Prize-winning book The Big Year by Mark Obmascik published in 2004 and later the Twentieth Century Fox full length movie starring Jack Black\, Steve Martin\, and Owen Wilson filmed in 2010 and released in 2011. He has been birding since a young age\, started and encouraged by his father. He has been birding for over 50 years\, covering all 50 states and much of Canada. Since his Big Year adventure Greg has continued birding and has been very active in promoting birding\, young birders’ activities\, and bird records contributions through eBird. In 2016\, he embarked on another Big Year\, this one non-traditional. It consisted of 11 one-week tours aimed at introducing many to target species birding\, with a goal of surpassing 500 species with that limited-time\, focused approach. He currently lives in Sugarcreek in the heart of Amish Country in Northeast Ohio. \nFriday Night Workshops\nOne workshop will feature a description of the use of eBird as the data input tool and archival database for the NY Breeding Bird Atlas III to begin field work in 2020. There will be examples from the work in progress using this tool on other breeding bird atlas projects\, such as those in Wisconsin and Virginia. This tool allows near real-time access to data\, so one can see almost immediately the status of effort in any block or of the project as a whole in lists and maps. Experts in the design and use of the tool from the eBird Team will lead the presentation and discussion. \nDaena Ford of Braddock Bay Raptor Research will present an historical perspective including highlights of its many research and educational programs: the Braddock Bay Hawk Count\, hawk banding\, owl survey\, and more. \nLodging and Meeting Headquarters\nThis meeting will be centered at the RIT Inn and Conference Center at 5257 West Henrietta Road in the town of Henrietta just south of Rochester and adjacent to the NY State Thruway not far from Exit 46. There is ample parking and access from both front and back plus nearer some rooms on the sides. There are two restaurants in the hotel. \nRoom Reservations\nA block of rooms has been reserved at the RIT Inn and Conference Center\, 5257 West Henrietta Road\, Rochester\, NY 14467\, to be held through September 14\, 2018. The rate for all rooms is $109.00 plus tax. Contact the RIT Inn and conference Center directly at 585-359-1800 to make your reservation. There are also other restaurants reasonably close in the nearby area. \nField Trips\nThe Rochester area has multiple areas where migrating birds of all types congregate: the shoreline of Lake Ontario\, with its Braddock and Irondequoit Bays; parks and cemeteries such as Durand Eastman Park\, Webster Park\, Mount Hope Cemetery\, and Holy Sepulchre Cemetery; glacial treasures such as Mendon Ponds Park with its kettle holes\, ponds\, woodlands\, and fields; and parcels preserved by the Genesee Land Trust and The Nature Conservancy\, all of which make up a vibrant\, diverse habitat for birders to enjoy. Field trips will highlight shorebird species lingering near our inland ponds and inlets\, passerine banding efforts at Braddock Bay Bird Observatory\, and songbirds along the scenic pathways of our parks and preserves. Once the conference disbands\, homebound travelers heading east have only a short detour from the Thruway to find Montezuma Wildlife Refuge and Wetlands Complex\, while those heading west pass close to Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge and the Batavia Waste Water Treatment Plant. \nAs the 2018 fall migration unfolds\, Rochester’s field trip experts will be scouting these areas and more to locate the best spots for finding fall treasures. Full trip descriptions will be published nearer the conference date\, and specific field trip locations with sign-ups will be available at the meeting’s check-in table. \nPapers Session\nA paper session will be presented on Saturday afternoon beginning at 1:30 PM and ending by 5:00 PM\, with a short break mid-session. Typically\, papers relate to topics of interest to birders and are often given by students or researchers from New York schools.

SUMMARY:Ganondagan State Historic Site
DESCRIPTION:We’ll start near the longhouse and the meadowlark field and then go down a wide trail through woods\, shrub land\, wetland\, and to an overlook in grassland.  The round trip is 1.5 miles and is suitable for most.  After we reach the overlook\, those who wish can continue for another mile or two on the narrower Seneca Trail through field and woods across County Rte. 41 and along a stream to the Bobolink field. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Beginner Trip: Charlotte & Badgerow Park
DESCRIPTION:We’ll be looking for shorebirds\, warblers\, and other fall migrants in Greece and environs. George W. Badgerow Park is a small area that offers good vantage points along pleasant trails\, with the occasional surprise rarity.  We’ll look for gulls in many plumages and some shorebirds\, too.  \nMeet at 8:00 a.m. at Ontario Beach Park in Charlotte in the northeast corner of the parking lot\, beside the Genesee River outlet.  Extra spotting scopes would be very helpful.\n \nNote: This is a field trip for beginners. New birders should feel free to join these trips regardless of experience level: bring binoculars if you have them\, and we will share our scopes. The pace & focus of Beginner Trips may not be satisfying for experienced birders. Our Beginner Trips focus on teaching identification skills\, learning new habitats\, and answering questions. Experienced birders are welcome but may be pressed into service as educators!

SUMMARY:Barnhart's Camp and Keeney Swamp Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Travel throughout the diverse landscapes of Northern Allegany County\, 20 minutes south of Letchworth State Park.  Grassland\, woodland\, pond and swampland species such as Prairie and Mourning Warbler\, bluebirds\, Pied-billed Grebe\, and maybe a bittern or two should be seen.  This trip generally goes all day so we can see as much as possible! \nMeet in the parking lot between Pizzeria Uno and Yolickety on Hylan Drive (across from Marketplace Mall) at 6:30 a.m. where possible car pool arrangements can be made\, or at Shop ‘N Save in Nunda on Rt. 408 at 7:30 a.m. \nLunch at Barnhart’s camp is a trip tradition.  Bring a dish to pass – your choice (but this is optional).

SUMMARY:Ganondagan State Historic Site
DESCRIPTION:We will start near the longhouse and the meadowlark field and then head down a wide trail through the woods\, shrub land\, wetland\, and to an overlook in grassland.  The round trip is 1.5 miles and is suitable for most\, including knobby tire electric wheel chairs.  After we read the over look\, those who wish can continue for another mile or two on the narrower Seneca Trail through field and woods across County Rte. 41 and along a stream to the bobolink field. \nMeet at the Longhouse on State Route 444 (Victor-Bloomfield Road near Boughton Hill Road) at 7:00 a.m. \n

DESCRIPTION:To make reservations\, contact Wanda Thistle by phone (585-236-1834) or e-mail Wanda Thistle to reserve a spot. \nPlease advise of the number of people coming\, whether or not you are also a member of Burroughs Audubon Nature Club (BANC)\, and the dish you will bring (appetizer\, salad\, or dessert). RBA will provide ice and charcoal if you want to grill. \nEach member should bring your own meat to grill\, your dish to pass\, your place setting (dishes & silverware)\, and your beverage. Bring tongs or a spatula for use with the grill. \nPlease carpool if you can because parking is very limited\, and don’t forget to bring binoculars for viewing birds! \nThe picnic is always informal and fun. The BANC facility is located in an ideal location to see birds. If you haven’t been to the picnic then you haven’t had the opportunity to enjoy this lovely spot. \nLooking forward to see you there! \nDirections: From Route 96 turn onto Fishers Road\, go 1.3 miles. SUMMARY:Allegany County Breeding Birds Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:We’ll begin our day along Rt. 21 overlooking Almond Dam looking for Bald Eagle\, and possible shorebirds. We’ll bird in Christmas tree plantations in the town of Andover for nesting Magnolia\, Prairie\, and Yellow-rumped Warbler and possible Clay-colored Sparrow. We’ll check mature conifer plantations for Red-shouldered Hawk\, Golden-crowned Kinglet\, Blackburnian Warbler\, Winter Wren\, Mourning and Canada Warbler\, and Blue-headed Vireo. We’ll have a picnic lunch at Foster Lake where we often have Common Raven\, and we’ll check local ponds for nesting Hooded Merganser\, Green Heron\, White-throated Sparrow and more. \nBring a picnic lunch. Meet at 6:00 a.m. at the former Border’s Books lot (Near Pizzeria Uno\, 1000 Hylan Dr.) on Hylan Drive off I-390. Others may want to join the group in Almond at the 7-11 gas/ convenience store on Rt. 21 at 8:00 a.m.

SUMMARY:Bergen Swamp Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:A trip to this unique place is by special permit from the Bergen Swamp Preservation Society and will feature nesting birds. The mix of vegetation zones provides secluded nesting habitat for the usual western N.Y. species as well as those more characteristic of the Canadian zone such as Blue-headed Vireo\, Hermit Thrush\, Magnolia\, Blackburnian\, Black-and-white\, Canada\, and Nashville Warbler. \nThis is a walking trip of 3–5 miles on variably wet and slippery corduroy trails that must be followed closely for safety reasons and because of the fragile habitat. Sturdy boots (rather than sneakers) are STRONGLY recommended and hiking or ski poles may be useful.  Massasauga rattlesnakes are VERY rarely encountered. \nParking at the trail head is limited so we will meet in the parking lot of the 7-11 Gas Station at the junction of Routes 33 and 19 at 7:30 a.m. Drive about 20 miles west of Rochester on I-490 to exit 2. Turn right (west) on Route 33 and go about one mile to the junction with Route 19. Turn left onto Route 19\, then immediately turn left into the parking lot.

SUMMARY:Canadice Lake Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:We’ll go down the east side of the lake for a variety of nesting passerines\, especially warblers and vireos. There will be a short walk at the south end of the lake but mostly we’ll drive and park along the shore. \nMeet at the Rush Town Hall parking lot on the south west corner of E. Henrietta (Rt. 15A) and Rt. 251 (Rush-Mendon Rd) at 7:00 a.m.

SUMMARY:Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:We will search for Prothonotary Warbler\, Yellow-throated Vireo\, Cerulean Warbler\, and other nesting birds at this local natural treasure. We’ll drive to various spots in the Refuge and take an easy walk along one of the very scenic trails. \nMeet at 7:00 a.m. at the Sweden Corner Plaza in Brockport at the junction of Routes 31 and 19. It is advisable to bring water and snacks or a picnic lunch since there may be no local resources and the trip may last into the afternoon.

SUMMARY:Powder Mills Park & BANC Sanctuary (Joint Field Trip with Burroughs Audubon Nature Club)
DESCRIPTION:On the east side\, Powder Mills Park is a mature woodland park that can be productive for many species of late migrating or nesting warblers and other songbirds.  Blue-winged Warbler\, Baltimore Oriole\, Rose-breasted Grosbeak\, Scarlet Tanager\, Pileated Woodpecker and Red-tailed Hawk have all nested there in the past couple years. \nThe trip will continue with a visit to the BANC Sanctuary on Railroad Mills Road\, where we’ll walk the trails round the woodland\, wetland and creek habitats.  Nesting species there include Eastern Bluebird\, House Wren\, Eastern Phoebe and Screech-Owl\, and adjacent treelines have produced a variety of migrating warblers. \nMeet at the Powder Mills Park Fish Hatchery parking lot on Park Road at 7:30 a.m.

SUMMARY:Lucien Morin Park (formerly Ellison Park Wetlands) Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:We will meet at 8:30 a.m. in the Lucien Morin Parking lot off Empire Blvd. in Penfield. The parking lot is on the south side of Empire Blvd. just east of the bridge over Irondequoit Creek at the south end of Irondequoit Bay. MacGregor’s Bar (1129 Empire Blvd.) is just west of the parking lot. \nThe park has trails through a mixture of habitats attractive to spring migrants. At the end of the trip we will look for the Bald Eagle nest on the Bay.
