SUMMARY:***CANCELLED*** Amy's Pond & Woodsmith -- Genesee Land Trust / RBA Joint Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:***CANCELLED*** \nThis is a field trip to the private property of Janet Smith for spring migrants\, early nesters and waterfowl.  Two adjacent easements make up 187 acres that include two large ponds\, mature woodland\, and open fields all within 0.5 mile of Lake Ontario.  Past trips have yielded eagles\, bitterns\, herons\, many warblers\, Scarlet Tanagers\, etc.  We’ll walk along uneven trails\, so bring a walking stick if needed\, and prepare for a medium-long hike in an outstanding sanctuary open only by special arrangement — many thanks to Genesee Land Trust! \nMeet at 7:00 a.m. at Webster Park on the west corner of Holt and Lake Roads\, or at Amy’s Pond at 7:30 a.m.  To get to Amy’s Pond\, take Route 104 east to County Line Road.  Drive north until it ends at Lake Road.  Turn right and travel approximately one mile to 484 Lake Road\, Ontario\, NY and turn down the long gravel driveway (on the south side of Lake Road) until you reach the marked parking area.

SUMMARY:***CANCELLED*** Beginner Birder Trip: Lakeshore Warbler Hotspots
DESCRIPTION:***CANCELLED*** \nThe shoreline of Lake Ontario is a haven for migrating warblers and other passerines.  We will stop at several areas where these birds tend to congregate in spring.  Learn the basics of identifying our most colorful migrants on this trip.  We’ll be looking for color patterns\, song\, and the distinctive behaviors to enhance identification skills with these fast-moving beauties.  Several trails may be very muddy.  Waterproof boots are STRONGLY recommended! \nMeet at 7:30 a.m. at the parking lot behind Lakeview Community Church\, 30 Long Pond Road in Greece (near Edgemere Drive.). \nNote: This is a field trip for beginners. New birders should feel free to join these trips regardless of experience level: bring binoculars if you have them\, and we will share our scopes. The pace & focus of Beginner Trips may not be satisfying for experienced birders. Our Beginner Trips focus on teaching identification skills\, learning new habitats\, and answering questions. Experienced birders are welcome but may be pressed into service as educators!

SUMMARY:***CANCELLED*** Cobbs Hill Park Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:***CANCELLED*** \nWith spring in full swing\, come to one of Rochester’s best-kept birding secrets: Cobbs Hill Park’s Washington Grove.  Colorful warblers and other spring migrants arrive en masse at this urban oasis of tall stately trees.  Pat will demonstrate birding by ear as we search for Yellow-rumped\, Black-throated Blue\, and Black-throated Green\, Nashville\, Black-and-white and Hooded Warblers among others.  We will likely hear the flute-like Wood Thrush and see Hermit Thrushes searching the ground for food.  Sparrows\, orioles\, and perhaps a Scarlet Tanager will make an appearance.  Washington Grove is one of the best spring birding spots in the area. \nMeet at 8:00 a.m. opposite the reservoir in the grassy area between the road and the woods; use the Highland Avenue entrance\, just east of Monroe Avenue.

SUMMARY:***CANCELLED*** Taylor Marsh Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:***CANCELLED*** \nTaylor Marsh is a preserve owned by the Bergen Swamp Preservation Society and located in Ontario County north of Honeoye Lake.  It is best known for marsh birds\, including both American and Least Bittern and Virginia Rail.  However\, the star attraction is the 2-3 Sandhill Cranes that have been present in this area all year around for many years.  They are occasionally heard at Taylor\, although seldom seen.  Taylor also has brush-shrub and wooded upland habitat with a good variety of spring migrants and breeding birds.  An adjacent hay field is home to Bobolinks and meadowlarks.  It has a checklist of well over 100 species\, and we usually rack up 40-50 in just a couple of hours. \nMeet at 8:00 a.m. at the Taylor Marsh parking area on the west side of Allen’s Hill Road just south of Nighan Hill Road.  From Rochester\, take I-390 south to the Avon exit.  Turn left onto Routes 5&20 and go east.  In the town of Lima\, turn right onto Route 15 A and follow it south.  Turn left onto Richmond Mills Road (Livingston County Road 41).  It becomes Ontario County Road 15.  Follow County Road 15 past County Road 37 and turn right at the next stop sign onto Allen’s Hill Road.  (There is no road sign at the intersection.)

SUMMARY:***CANCELLED***Braddock Bay Hawk Lookout Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:The RBA is committed to following NYS guidelines and directives regarding social distancing and the COVID-19 pandemic. \nCurrently\, all field trips\, meetings\, and birds-and-brews through the end of April are cancelled\, and we anticipate canceling events in May and June as well. As the situation is dynamic\, we will continue to monitor conditions and make changes to our schedule as needed. Should the situation improve and Governor Cuomo lift restrictions on gathering sizes\, we may reinstate currently cancelled trips. Visiting the event posting on our website is the surest way to tell if an event has been cancelled. \nWhile we are not currently able to bird together during this difficult time\, we encourage everyone to keep birding on their own. To keep yourself and others safe\, we remind you to follow best practices for social distancing: \n\nStaying close to home minimizes your exposure\, as long drives require more stops at gas stations and communal restrooms.\nBird alone or with others from your household; do not go birding with friends.\nAvoid birding in highly trafficked areas. Instead of crowding into the Owl Woods or piling on the Hawkwatch Platform\, find somewhere less populated. Visit https://rochesterbird.wpengine.com/birding-hotspots-map/\nto find other spots to bird\nAvoid touching shared surfaces like railings and benches.\nStay six feet away from others\, even outdoors.\nDo not share scopes\, binoculars\, or field guides.\nCarry a small bottle of hand sanitizer or some alcohol wipes with you.\n\nEnjoy the fresh air and migrating birds as spring unfolds. The sooner we all do our part to not spread the virus\, the sooner we can all enjoy being together again. \nStay well and safe\, \nLiz Magnanti\nPresident\, RBA \n***CANCELLED***This trip is for the spring hawk flight and migrating songbirds.  This is a joint trip with the Buffalo Ornithological Society.  We will be working to identify distant raptors and meet some great new people\, too! \nMeet at 9:30 a.m. at the Braddock Bay Park main parking lot.  Use the East Manitou Road exit from the Ontario State Parkway.

SUMMARY:***CANCELLED***April Meeting: Jean Iron - "The Nature of Arctic Birds "
\nStay well and safe\, \nLiz Magnanti\nPresident\, RBA \n***CANCELLED***Arctic birds have a special attraction for birders and are amongst our most sought-after species. In this presentation\, Jean will take us north to look at birds whose exceptional endurance and lifestyle are determined by the relentless forces of nature. Physical adaptations of arctic birds\, their colour schemes\, short breeding season\, populations\, and impressive migrations are characteristics that Jean will highlight in photos and videos. \nJean Iron is a well-known Ontario birder. She was president of the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) for nine years and editor of its newsletter for 14. In 2016\, she received the OFO Distinguished Ornithologist Award. \nJean has a special interest in the qualities and adaptations of arctic birds. As an expedition leader for Quest Nature Tours to Canada’s High Arctic\, Greenland\, Iceland\, and Svalbard in the Norwegian Arctic\, she experienced arctic birds in their natural habitats. \nAnnually since 2002\, Jean went north to Hudson Bay and James Bay to survey shorebirds and geese for Canadian Wildlife Service and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry. \nHere at home\, Jean loves gulls and the Niagara River\, where she co-led the OFO Niagara trip for 17 years and gave gull identification workshops and quizzes. \nIvory Gull

SUMMARY:March Meeting: Christina Hoh\, NYSDEC Biologist\, Avon NY - "Monitoring New York’s Winter Raptors"
DESCRIPTION:Dear RBA members. \nOur meeting tonight at 7:30 at the Baptist Temple\, 1100 Clover Street\, Rochester\, will go on as planned. Your health and well-being are our concern. \nPlease consider the following: \nIf you are not feeling well\, please stay home. \nIf it has been less than 14 days since returning from a trip where the corona virus has been active\, please stay home. \nPlease avoid direct contact with other people–no hugs or handshakes. \nWe will space chairs with more distance between them. Members are welcome to move them closer together if comfortable. \nWhen you arrive\, please go the restroom and wash your hands thoroughly–20 seconds–before entering the fellowship hall. \nWe have a great program tonight with Christina Hoh speaking on winter raptor monitoring. We look forward to seeing you! \nLiz Magnanti\, President\, RBA \n\n\nUpstate New York is known for its harsh winters\, but a handful of raptor species specialize in cold and snowy weather and spend their winters right here in our communities. These charismatic raptors\, including Northern Harriers and Short-eared Owls\, are under a wide range of threats\, and NYSDEC\, its partners\, and volunteers work together to monitor these nomadic birds across their winter range in New York. We will discuss these birds’ natural history\, current trends\, our surveys\, and what we’ve learned over the last few years. Christina will also introduce the new DEC raptor technicians\, who will discuss how you can take part in monitoring and our ongoing effort to conserve these fascinating species. \nChristina Hoh first came upstate to attend RIT\, where she earned a B.S. in Biology and was introduced to avian research through bird banding on campus and at the Braddock Bay Bird Observatory. She then attended SUNY Brockport\, where she monitored Great Lakes coastal wetland birds and amphibians and studied migration physiology of White-throated Sparrows for her M.S. degree. She spent four years as a Wildlife Technician at NYSDEC\, where she monitored rare bird species and their habitat\, and now works as a DEC Habitat Biologist here in the Finger Lakes/Western New York region. \n\n  \n

SUMMARY:Beginner Birder Trip: Irondequoit Bay\, Lakeshore\, and Genesee River Outlet
DESCRIPTION:In areas of open water\, we’ll look for some of the spectacular waterfowl that visit each winter\, and with luck even see a few rarities!  The spots we visit feature good\, close looks with very little walking.  Dress warmly as we may be standing outside for 2 to 3 hours (although you are free to leave at any time!).  Wear boots with good traction. \nMeet at 8:00 a.m. in the parking lot on the west side of the Irondequoit Bay outlet bridge.  Bring your spotting scope if you have one\, or share ours in turns.

SUMMARY:Little Lakes Christmas Bird Count – Saturday\, December 28th\, 2019
DESCRIPTION:This year marks the 120th count nationwide and the 68th count for the area. The count date is Saturday\, December 28\, 2019. Birds seen during the count week of December 25 to January 2 may be called in to the leaders for inclusion in the tally. \nThe center of the 15 mile diameter circle is the outlet of Hemlock Lake\, at the north end of the lake. The circle includes all of Conesus\, Hemlock\, Canadice and Honeoye Lakes\, and a large area to the north. The dividing line between the lakes is the height of land between the lakes. It is important for the coverage in each of the 5 areas to be as consistent as possible\, year to year\, for meaningful evaluation of the count area. Your participation in this worthy endeavor would be greatly appreciated. New birders can be paired up with experienced birders. If you are interested\, contact one of the leaders. \nThe afternoon compiling meeting will be held at 4:30 p.m. at the American Hotel\, located at the SE corner of Routes 5 & 20 in the village of Lima. As an expression of our appreciation for letting us meet at this location\, please order something from the menu. SUMMARY:RBA Young Birder Event: Christmas Bird Count - Seneca Park
DESCRIPTION:Participating in a Christmas Bird Count is an annual tradition for many birders\, and this will be the 116th CBC in Rochester.  In a Christmas Bird Count\, birders try to count as many birds as possible within a particular “count circle.”  Rochester’s circle is further subdivided into various sectors\, and different teams of people are assigned to count the birds in those sectors.  The Young Birders have our own sector – Seneca Park. \nEarly risers may start the day shortly before dawn as we try to lure in owls – screech are the most likely.  The real trip begins at 7:30 as we walk through the Seneca Park trails\, counting as we go.  We typically wrap up in two or three hours (depending on how cold it is)\, but folks are welcome to come and go when they please and stay as long as they are having fun. \nFor the really die-hard fans\, we may have opportunities to fill in with understaffed sectors later in the afternoon\, and everyone can join the final compilation in the evening to see how many birds were counted in the entire circle.

SUMMARY:December: Daniel Baldassarre - "Linking Behavior and Biodiversity in Birds"
DESCRIPTION:Daniel Baldassarre is interested in evolutionary biology and biodiversity\, and especially loves studying birds. To study avian biodiversity\, he focuses on small populations of birds and looks for connections between unusual behaviors and broad-scale patterns. For example\, how does the promiscuous sexual behavior of subspecies of the Australian Red-backed Fairy-wren affect whether or not they will interbreed? Does the Galápagos Vampire Finch’s bizarre habit of drinking blood mean it is on a trajectory to become a new species? In the southwestern USA\, is the Phainopepla really two cryptic species that breed in different locations at different times of the year? Come to his Rochester Birding Association talk to find out!\n\n\nDaniel Baldassarre is an Assistant Professor of Zoology in the SUNY Oswego Department of Biological Sciences. He grew up in Tully\, NY\, got his undergraduate degree at Syracuse University\, went to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology for my PhD\, and did postdoctoral research at the University of Miami and Princeton University. Daniel has been fortunate to study birds in Alaska\, Namibia\, New York\, Costa Rica\, Australia\, The Galápagos Islands\, and California. See Daniel’s website for more info about his research: www.danbaldassarre.weebly.com \n\n\n\nand follow him on Twitter: @evornithology \n\n\n\n.
