SUMMARY:Cornwall Preserve and Olga Fleisher Wildlife Preserve Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Notice:  Due to the sudden but temporary closure of the Camp Beechwood State Park\, this field trip has been modified to include the Cornwall Preserve. \nThe trip will begin at B. Forman Park just east of Pultneyville\, then proceed to the Cornwall Preserve.  The preserve is located on the shoreline of Lake Onatrio\, and it should attract warblers\, vireos\, thrushes and other migrants. \nBring beverages\, snacks or lunch if you plan to attend the second part of this trip to the Olga Fleisher Preserve\, a bottomland forest and wetland (known locally as Huckleberry Swamp) with an excellent boardwalk and trail. SUMMARY:Taylor Marsh Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Taylor Marsh is a preserve owned by the Bergen Swamp Preservation Society and located in Ontario County north of Honeoye Lake.  It is best known for marsh birds\, including both local bittern and Virginia Rail.  However\, the star attraction is the 2-3 Sandhill Cranes that have been present in this area all year around for many years.  They are occasionally heard at Taylor\, although seldom seen.  Taylor also has brush-shrub and wooded upland habitat with a good variety of spring migrants and breeding birds.  An adjacent hay field is home to Bobolinks and meadowlarks.  It has a checklist of well over 100 species\, and we usually rack up 40-50 in just a couple of hours. \nFrom Rochester\, take I-390 south to the Avon exit.  Turn left onto Routes 5&20 and go east.  In the town of Lima\, turn right onto Route 15 A and follow it south. Turn left onto Richmond Mills Road (Livingston County Road 41) east.  It becomes Ontario County Road 15.  Follow County Road 15 past County Road 37 and turn right at the next stop sign onto Allen’s Hill Road. (There is no road sign at the intersection.) \nMeet at 8:00 a.m.at the Taylor Marsh parking area on the west side of Allen’s Hill Road just south of Nighan Hill Road.

DESCRIPTION:Whether you’re a new or aspiring birder who wants help finding and identifying the most colorful birds of spring\, or an experienced birder who is looking for a quick trip on the way home from work\, Warbler Wednesdays are a perfect respite for busy people. \nJoin John Boettcher and the RBA each Wednesday evening in May\, for a quick trip.  We’ll meet at 6:00 p.m. in the parking lot of Lucien Morien Park\, located at 1135 Empire Blvd. in Penfield.  The park is at the south end of Irondequoit Bay\, just to the east of where Irondequoit Creek enters. We’ll bird from the access road that wanders up through the park\, examining the edges and adjacent wetlands nearby for migrating warblers and other passerines. While you may want sturdy shoes and bug spray\, you likely don’t need your full field wardrobe. \nNote:  The address will take you to the right venue\, but the pin on the map is in the wrong spot.  We’ll be meeting near MacGregors\, not up by Bay Towne. \n

SUMMARY:Cobbs Hill Park Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:With Spring in full swing\, come to one of Rochester’s best-kept birding secrets: Cobbs Hill Park’s Washington Grove. Colorful warblers and other spring migrants arrive en masse at this urban oasis of tall stately trees.  We will search for Yellow-rumped Warblers\, Black-throated Blue\, and Black-throated Green Warblers\, Nashville\, Black-and-white and Hooded Warblers among others. We will likely hear the flute-like Wood Thrush and see Hermit Thrushes searching the ground for food. Sparrows\, orioles\, and perhaps a Scarlet Tanager will make an appearance.  Washington Grove is one of the best spring birding spots in the area. \nMeet at 8:00 a.m. opposite the reservoir in the grassy area between the road and the woods; use the Highland Avenue entrance\, just east of Monroe Ave.

DESCRIPTION:The shoreline of Lake Ontario is a haven for migrating warblers and other passerines. We’ll look for those early warblers\, such as Palm and Yellow-rumped Warblers\, to whet our appetites for the weeks to come. We will stop at several areas where these birds tend to congregate in spring. Learn the basics of identifying our most colorful migrants on this trip. We’ll be looking for color patterns\, song\, and the distinctive behaviors to enhance identification skills with these fast-moving beauties.  Several trails may be very muddy\, so boots are STRONGLY recommended! \nMeet at 8:00 a.m. at the parking lot behind Lakeview Community Church\, 30 Long Pond Rd. in Greece (near Edgemere Dr.). \nNote: This is a field trip for beginners. New birders should feel free to join these trips regardless of experience level: bring binoculars if you have them\, and we will share our scopes. The pace & focus of Beginner Trips may not be satisfying for experienced birders. SUMMARY:High Acres Nature Area Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Over 130 bird species have been observed at HANA including\, more than 70 that nest in the diverse habitats found there. During this field trip we expect to see at least 40 species returning to nest or on their way to northern nesting grounds. Our approximately two mile walk will explore about 250 acres at HANA and include some wet spots requiring ankle-high waterproof shoes or boots. \nWe will meet at 8:00 a.m. at the parking lot on Perinton Parkway approximately 1/4 mile east of the Waste Management offices. The bridge just west of this parking lot has been closed\, so plan your route accordingly. Extra spotting scopes would be very helpful.

DESCRIPTION:This will be an evening trip for woodcock courtship flight.  If you’ve never seen this spectacle\, prepare to be amazed:  birds call noisily from the ground in grassy fields before spiraling rapidly up high\, descending back down in a zigzagging noisy frenzy\, only to start the cycle anew.  An amazing sight! \nMeet in the parking lot on the right side of Manitou Beach Road just off the Lake Ontario State Parkway and across from the Owl Woods trail head at 7:00 p.m. The Owl Woods Trails may be wet and muddy in spots. SUMMARY:April:  Luke DeGroote - "Clear and present danger: Bird-window collisions"
DESCRIPTION:Smack! That’s the sound of a bird hitting a window—and you’ve probably heard it often. \nCollisions with windows cause millions of bird fatalities every year. But now there’s new hope for birds thanks to scientists at Powdermill Nature Reserve. Listen to Luke DeGroote share his findings from testing bird’s perception of patterned glass in a flight tunnel to collision monitoring in downtown Pittsburgh.  Before the end\, you’ll learn how to make your own windows safer for birds. \nLuke DeGroote received his MSc. in Natural Resources from Ohio State and B.S. in Wildlife Ecology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  Since 2012\, DeGroote has overseen Carnegie Museum of Natural History’s avian research programs including the operation of Powdermill’s Avian Research Center (www.powdermillarc.org) where he studies songbird migration\, avian disease\, breeding phenology\, and avian perception of glass.  DeGroote aims to promote avian conservation through research\, partnerships\, and outreach.  DeGroote and his research have been featured on NPR\, the Atlantic\, Discovery Channel’s Daily Planet\, and Audubon Magazine.

DESCRIPTION:We’ll look primarily for our smallest visiting owl\, the Northern Saw-whet\, which returns to this spot on a yearly basis. Long-eared Owl generally put in an appearance\, too\, although they’re quite shy and great at hiding. After the owl walk we’ll head to the Hawk Watch site to learn how to identify raptors on the wing. At this time of year\, we might witness spectacular flights of thousands of raptors! \nMeet in the Parking Lot on the right side of Manitou Beach Road across from the Owl Woods trail head at 7:30 a.m. The Owl Woods trails may be wet and muddy in spots. Boots are STRONGLY recommended – they’re almost mandatory! \nNote: This is a field trip for beginners. New birders should feel free to join these trips regardless of experience level: bring binoculars if you have them\, and we will share our scopes. The pace & focus of Beginner Trips may not be satisfying for experienced birders. SUMMARY:March:  Greg Lawrence - "Restoring Wetlands for Birds: An overview of ongoing wetland restoration projects in the Braddock Bay WMA and how they’ll impact bird communities"
DESCRIPTION:The Braddock Bay Wildlife Management Area (WMA) includes a series of large barrier beach wetlands on the south shore of Lake Ontario\, just northwest of Rochester.  A combination of lake-level regulation\, introduction of invasive species\, increased development on adjacent land\, pollution\, and other factors led to degradation of these coastal wetlands over the last 100 years.  As part of an effort to de-list the Rochester Embayment as an Area of Concern\, state and federal agencies and their partners completed multiple wetland restoration projects in the Braddock Bay WMA.  Greg Lawrence\, research scientist in the Department of Environmental Science & Ecology at The College at Brockport\, will give an overview of the current and completed restoration projects in Braddock Bay WMA and how they aim to impact the bird communities in the coastal wetlands. \nGreg Lawrence is a research scientist in the Department of Environmental Science & Ecology at the College at Brockport.  He manages multiple wetland restoration and monitoring grants through various federal\, state\, and non-profit agencies focusing on Lake Ontario and eastern Lake Erie coastal wetlands.  His research interests include Great Lakes coastal wetland ecology\, restoration\, management\, and monitoring\, as well as bird population monitoring and conservation\, peatland ecology and restoration\, and grassland community ecology. \n

DESCRIPTION:Featuring recently salvaged and digitized images from rare glass lantern slides\, Charlie Cowling\, archivist at SUNY Brockport\, will present images of New York birds taken by regional birders in the early 20th century. \nOur area was an important center in the development of modern birding and ornithology\, and the photographers that will be featured played a part in that history. Some\, like Arthur Allen of Cornell\, are remembered to this day. Others\, like Verdi Burtch of Penn Yan\, or Guy Bailey of Geneseo\, were prominent amateur naturalists and birders a century ago\, but are little remembered now. \nAny birder will enjoy both the images\, and hearing about the history of that era when birding transitioned from collecting skins with shotguns to using cameras and field glasses. \nCharlie Cowling is the college archivist at the SUNY College at Brockport. An archivist and librarian for many years\, he enjoys birding outside of work.

SUMMARY:RBA Young Birder Event:  Ducks - Where is the White?
DESCRIPTION:Ducks are awesome\, and lucky for us\, they are abundant in Rochester even in the winter.  Lake Ontario and the Finger Lakes team with mergansers\, scaup\, scoter\, Long-tailed Ducks\, Redheads\, Common Goldeneye\, and more even on the coldest days.  They are easy to watch because (except for the divers) they generally don’t move too quickly\, and they are pretty easy to identify once you know what to look for. \nWe’ll start this meeting at the home of the Kunz family\, who live on the shore of Lake Ontario.  We’ll learn how to identify swimming ducks by focusing on features like behavior\, head shape\, bill length\, and the all important “where is the white?”  If the weather cooperates\, we’ll be able to head over to the bay and practice our ID skills.  If the weather is crummy\, we’ll look for ducks and gulls from the window\, and we’ll play games and trivia.  We’ll also have a quick update on the summer birding camps that take place across the US and the scholarships available to help pay for them. \nContact Andrea Patterson for address.

SUMMARY:Beginner Birder Trip:  Irondequoit Bay\, Lakeshore\, and Genesee River Outlet
DESCRIPTION:In open areas of water\, we’ll look for some of the spectacular waterfowl that visit each winter\, and with luck even see a few rarities!  The spots we visit feature good\, close looks with very little walking.  Dress warmly as we may be standing outside for some time.  Wear boots with good traction. \nMeet at 8:00 a.m. in one of the several convenient parking lots on the west side of the outlet at the north end of Irondequoit Bay (end of Culver Road). Bring your spotting scope if you have one\, or share ours in turns.   \nNote: This is a field trip for beginners. New birders should feel free to join these trips regardless of experience level: bring binoculars if you have them\, and we will share our scopes. The pace & focus of Beginner Trips may not be satisfying for experienced birders. Our Beginner Trips focus on teaching identification skills\, learning new habitats\, and answering questions. Experienced birders are welcome but may be pressed into service as educators!

SUMMARY:Little Lakes Christmas Bird Count – Saturday\, December 29th\, 2018
DESCRIPTION:This year marks the 119th count nationwide and the 67th count for the area. The count date is Saturday\, December 29\, 2018. Birds seen during the count week of December 26 to January 1 may be called in to the leaders for inclusion in the tally. \nThe center of the 15 mile diameter circle is the outlet of Hemlock Lake\, at the north end of the lake. The circle includes all of Conesus\, Hemlock\, Canadice and Honeoye Lakes and a large area to the north. The dividing line between the lakes is the height of land between the lakes. It is important for the coverage in each of the 5 areas to be as consistent as possible\, year to year\, for meaningful evaluation of the count area. Your participation in this worthy endeavor would be greatly appreciated. New birders can be paired up with experienced birders. If you are interested\, contact one of the leaders. \nThe afternoon compiling meeting will be held at 4:30 p.m. at the American Hotel\, located at the SE corner of Routes 5 & 20 in the village of Lima.
