SUMMARY:October Meeting in Person & via Zoom with Speaker Adriaan Dokter\, Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, October 12 \nAdriaan Dokter\, Ph. D.\, Research associate\, Cornell Lab of Ornithology \nAdriaan Dokter studies the seasonal migrations of birds\, from the continental-scale movements of species to the fine-scale behavior of individuals flying through the atmosphere. He uses weather radar networks as well as individual tags to address questions in migration ecology\, including when and where birds migrate\, when and where birds die within the annual cycle\, and how shifting patterns in mortality and recruitment of young birds cause bird abundances to change. He also develops software tools for biologists using weather radar as a tool in their research. \nAdriaan Dokter is an ecologist with a background in physics. His research bridges the disciplines of ecology\, computer science\, physics\, and meteorology\, addressing questions about the effects of global change on the distribution and seasonal migration of birds. \nAfter receiving his Ph.D. at the Institute of Atomic and Molecular Physics in Amsterdam\, Dokter studied animal movement during postdoctoral appointments at the Netherlands Institute of Ecology\, the University of Amsterdam\, and the Netherlands Meteorological Institute. He has a continuing interest in understanding the role of individual decision making as a constituent of large-scale movement patterns\, which he explored in individual tracking studies on dark-bellied brent geese (Brant) and Eurasian Oystercatchers. \nLook for the Zoom link in your email a few days prior to the meeting. The Zoom Room will open at 6:45 PM.  Don’t wait until the last minute to sign on\, you might be left out!

SUMMARY:December Meeting in person or online via Zoom with Speaker Scott Weidensaul - "A World on the Wing: The Global Odyssey of Migratory Birds"
DESCRIPTION:Due to a vote being held to change the RBA Bylaws\, we will also be meeting in-person at Asbury Church.\n \nThursday\, December 14 \nScott Weidensaul \nA World on the Wing: The Global Odyssey of Migratory Birds \nEven as scientists make astounding discoveries about the navigational and physiological feats that enable migratory birds to cross immense oceans or fly above the highest mountains\, go weeks without sleep or remain in unbroken flight for months at a stretch\, humans have brought many migrants to the brink. Based on his bestselling new book “A World on the Wing\,” author and researcher Scott Weidensaul takes you around the globe — with researchers in the lab and field probing the limits of what migrating birds can do\, to the shores of the Yellow Sea in China and the remote mountains of northeastern India where tribal villages saved the greatest gathering of falcons on the planet — to learn how people are fighting to understand and save the world’s great bird migrations.\n \nScott Weidensaul is the author of more than two dozen books on natural history\, including the Pulitzer Prize finalist “Living on the Wind” and his latest\, the New York Times bestseller “A World on the Wing.” Weidensaul is a contributing editor for Audubon and writes for a variety of other publications\, including BWD and Living Bird. He is a Fellow of the American Ornithological Society and an active field researcher\, studying saw-whet owl migration for more than two decades\, as well as winter hummingbirds\, bird migration in Alaska\, and the winter movements of snowy owls through Project SNOWstorm\, which he co-founded.\n\n\nProposed Change to the RBA Bylaws \nAt this meeting\, we also will vote on the following change to the RBA Bylaws:  \nIf a successor to President cannot be found among the membership\, the President may serve more than two consecutive terms under the following conditions: (1) the acting President agrees to serve the additional term\, (2) there is unanimous agreement from the Board of Directors\, and (3) the President is re-elected by the membership during the election of Directors at the first annual membership meeting of the fiscal year.  \nIn the event that a President serving more than two years does occur\, the acting Past President may also stay to serve on the Board of Directors under the conditions:  (1) the acting Past President agrees to serve the additional term\, (2) there is unanimous agreement from the Board of Directors. If the acting Past President does not choose to stay on the Board\, their role will be filled by a past Board member with at least one year of experience. This member would be chosen by the current acting Board and needs to achieve a majority vote in favor by the Board.  \nTo join the meeting online\, click the Zoom link below. The Zoom Room will open at 6:45 PM.  Don’t wait until the last minute to sign on\, you might be left out! \n\nLook for the Zoom link in your email a few days prior to the meeting. SUMMARY:Little Lakes Christmas Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:This year marks the 124th count nationwide and the 72nd count for the area. The count date is Saturday December 30\, 2023. Birds seen during the count week of December 27th to January 2nd may be called in to the leaders for inclusion in the tally. \nThe center of the 15 mile diameter circle is the outlet of Hemlock Lake\, at the north end of the lake. The circle includes all of Conesus\, Hemlock\, Canadice and Honeoye Lakes and a large area to the north. The dividing line between the areas is the height of land between the lakes. It is important for the coverage in each of the five areas to be as consistent as possible\, year to year\, for meaningful evaluation of the count area. Your participation in this worthy endeavor would be greatly appreciated. New birders can be paired up with experienced birders. If you are interested\, contact one of the leaders. \nThe afternoon compiling meeting will be held at 4:30 pm at the American Hotel\, located at the SE corner of Routes 15A & 20 in the village of Lima. As an expression of our appreciation for letting us meet at this location\, please order something from the menu. They are known for their tasty soups. \nPat Martin\, Compiler \nCell: (585) 301-5485 \nArea                             Leader/email link    Phone\nConesus Lake             Jim Kimball               519-9211\nHemlock Lake            Bill Howe                   301-2646\nCanadice Lake            Phil Opdycke             385-6189\nHoneoye Lake            John Boettcher         298-3404\nNorthern Area            Robert Buckert         269-4206

SUMMARY:February: Dr. Jordan Boersma - “Leveraging Hunter Knowledge to Find and Conserve Bird Species in New Guinea”
DESCRIPTION: Thursday\, February 8\, 2024 – “Leveraging Hunter Knowledge to Find and Conserve Bird Species in New Guinea”\n \nDr. Jordan Boersma\nCornell Lab of Ornithology \nJordan will talk about how his team leveraged the immense natural history knowledge of local hunters to find the Black-naped Pheasant-pigeon\, a species with no scientific documentation since the 1800s. They used an innovative approach to gauge accuracy of knowledge and determine whether this critically endangered species was familiar to local hunters\, then worked with experienced hunters to capture the first-ever photos and video of this species. He will also highlight pending efforts to conserve the remaining habitat for the Black-naped Pheasant-pigeon\, and how their methods can be applied to other elusive and potentially imperiled species. Depending on his field schedule\, he may also have stories to share about using the same methods to search for another bird species with no previous photographic evidence. \nDr. Jordan Boersma’s curiosity for birds developed in his backyard in W Michigan\, where he spent his childhood. He headed west to study wildlife biology at the University of Montana\, which led to an opportunity to study ornate and elusive birds in Borneo\, where he spent much of four years before pursuing a Ph.D at Washington State University. His dissertation work centered on physiology and behavior of fairywrens\, a colorful and socially complex family of birds native to Australia and New Guinea. During extensive field seasons in New Guinea he learned that indigenous people harbored immense knowledge of local fauna\, and is now working with local communities to study and conserve rare and potentially imperiled species as a postdoctoral researcher at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. \n  \nLook for the Zoom link in your email a few days prior to the meeting. The Zoom Room will open at 6:45 PM.  Don’t wait until the last minute to sign on\, you might be left out!

SUMMARY:March: Emily Engle = "Behind the Scenes of Merlin Sound ID"
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, March 14\, 2024\n \nEmily Engle\nOutreach Coordinator\, Cornell Lab of Ornithology \nThe Merlin Bird ID app\, created by the Cornell lab of Ornithology\, is a global field guide and a powerful tool to help identify the birds around you. Merlin can help you identify 1\,000+ bird species by sound even when you can’t see them—but how does it work? We’ll take a behind the scenes look at Merlin to learn how Sound ID was developed\, and how you can help us expand Merlin to cover more species worldwide. \nHailing from Santa Barbara\, Emily Engle grew up hiking the mountains and exploring the tidepools of California’s central coast. Hands-on experiences in the outdoors gave her a love for the natural world and inspired her to pursue an education learning how to protect it. Fueled by a passion for connecting people to nature\, science\, and conservation\, Emily earned her degree in Environmental Studies from UC Santa Cruz. From researching mountain lions in the West to guiding as a naturalist in Georgia’s Golden Isles\, her work has allowed her to explore the critical interdependence between people and wildlife. After falling in love with the birds and landscapes of coastal Georgia\, she moved to Ithaca and began her role as an Outreach Coordinator at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology aiding in the celebration of birds\, community science\, and conservation action through Merlin and eBird. \nLook for the Zoom link in your email a few days prior to the meeting. The Zoom Room will open at 6:45 PM.  Don’t wait until the last minute to sign on\, you might be left out!

SUMMARY:Beginner Birder Trip - Owl Woods & Hawk Watch Site
DESCRIPTION:We’ll look primarily for our smallest visiting owl\, the Northern Saw-whet\, which returns to this spot on a yearly basis. Long-eared Owls generally put in an appearance\, too\, although they’re quite shy and great at hiding. After the owl walk\, we’ll head to the Braddock Bay Park Hawk Watch site to learn how to identify raptors on the wing. At this time of year\, we might witness spectacular flights of thousands of raptors! \nThe Owl Woods trails are flat and likely will be wet and muddy. Boots are strongly recommended–they’re almost mandatory! No restrooms available. Bring binoculars and\, if you have them\, spotting scopes. \nMeet at 8:30 a.m. in the parking lot on the right side of Manitou Beach Road across from the Owl Woods trailhead. \nLeader: Liz Magnanti 585-748-0309 and co-leaders Dick Horsey 585-435-2837\, Doug and Elizabeth Rabjohns 585-690-6296 \nNote: This is a field trip for beginners. New birders should feel free to join these trips regardless of experience level: bring binoculars if you have them. The pace & focus of Beginner Trips may not be satisfying for experienced birders. Our Beginner Trips focus on teaching identification skills\, learning new habitats\, and answering questions. Experienced birders are welcome but may be pressed into service as educators \nRBA Field Trip Guidelines \nAll field trips go rain/snow or shine unless there is a travel advisory issued. SUMMARY:Woodcock Courtship Flight at Owl Woods
DESCRIPTION:This will be an evening trip for woodcock courtship flight. If you’ve never seen this spectacle\, prepare to be amazed: birds call noisily (peenting) from the ground in grassy fields before spiraling rapidly up high\, making twittering\, kissing-like sounds at the apex of their ascent and descending silently back down\, only to start the cycle anew. An amazing sight! \nFields may be wet and muddy. Boots are strongly recommended. Bring a flashlight or headlamp. \nMeet at 7:00 p.m. in the parking lot across from Owl Woods. Take the Manitou Beach Road exit from Ontario State Parkway. Turn north then right into the large parking lot. \nLeader: Neal Reilly 518-256-9147 and co-leader Robert Buckert 585-269-4206 \n  \nRBA Field Trip Guidelines \nAll field trips go rain/snow or shine unless there is a travel advisory issued.
