SUMMARY:NEW! Oatka Fish and Game Club
DESCRIPTION:NEW! Eventbrite pre-registration for field trips has ended and is no longer available. \nThe Oatka Fish and Game Club owns and conserves 500 acres of mature woodland forest along Oatka Creek and the escarpment tablelands above it that provide ideal habitat for migrating and nesting passerines. Thanks to the efforts of Jim Mott and Jim Miles\, Cerulean Warblers were documented as nesting there in 2022. Through that connection\, the Club has generously invited RBA to hold a field trip. \nWe will walk on the wide\, undulating\, forest trail above the creek and possibly up on the escarpment searching for remaining migrants and nesting birds. The trails are dry\, but sturdy shoes are recommended. Dress for the weather and insects. A bathroom is available on site. \nMeet at 8:00 a.m. at the clubhouse parking lot (end of Wilcox Road). 8237 Wilcox Road\, Le Roy\, NY 14482. Note: If high winds are predicted the trip will be cancelled. \nLeaders:  Jim Mott 585-244-5577 and co-leaders Tom and Jeanne Verhulst 585-362-0803 \n  \nRBA Field Trip Guidelines \nAll field trips go rain/snow or shine unless there is a travel advisory issued. SUMMARY:Letchworth State Park
DESCRIPTION:This trip frequently garners one of the higher bird lists among RBA field trips. Of course\, it gets an early start!  We’ll look for birds not frequently seen on other trips\, such as Acadian Flycatcher. We’ll do a fair amount of walking: one somewhat steep but short forest trail and a dirt road down to the river level\, as well as some roadside birding. \nRestrooms are available at several locations along the way. \nMeet at 5:30 a.m. at the Dam Overlook Gifts and Grill parking lot (use the Route 36 entrance to Letchworth Park)). Pack a lunch and snacks\, as the trip will likely last well into mid-afternoon. Spotting scopes would be very useful. \nLeader: Elijah Kruger 585-329-7754 and co-leader Neal Reilly 518-256-9147 \n  \nRBA Field Trip Guidelines \nAll field trips go rain/snow or shine unless there is a travel advisory issued. SUMMARY:Bergen Swamp
DESCRIPTION:A trip to this unique place is by special permit from the Bergen Swamp Preservation Society and will feature nesting birds. The mix of vegetation zones provides secluded nesting habitat for the usual western N.Y. species as well as those more characteristic of the Canadian zone such as Blue-headed Vireo\, Hermit Thrush\, Magnolia\, Blackburnian\, Black-and-white\, Canada and Nashville Warblers. This is a walking trip of 3 miles on variably wet and slippery corduroy trails that must be followed closely for safety reasons and because of the fragile habitat. \nSturdy boots (rather than sneakers) are strongly recommended\, and hiking or ski poles may be useful. \nMeet at 7:30 a.m. at the main trailhead entrance to Bergen Swamp: 6646 Hessenthaler Rd\, Byron\, NY 14422. From Rochester\, take I-490 west to Exit 2. Take Rt. 33 west and turn right (north) onto Route 19. Turn left at the fire station onto Hunter Road–it becomes Swamp Road. Follow Swamp Road west past Pocock Road and turn right onto Hessenthaler Road. The swamp entrance is at the kiosk on the right. Park along the right shoulder\, but do not park in front of the caretaker’s house. \nLeader: Greg Lawrence 585-730-2553 and co-leader Neal Reilly 518-256-9147 \n  \nRBA Field Trip Guidelines \nAll field trips go rain/snow or shine unless there is a travel advisory issued. Trips run approximately 2 to 4 hours. Bring binoculars. Wear weather appropriate clothing and sturdy shoes. Please arrive at the designated meeting location 10 minutes before the start time of the trip. Colds\, flu\, and COVID are still around–if you’re not feeling well\, please stay home. Please carpool when possible! \nWaive and Release from Liability: By participating in this field trip you acknowledge that you assume all risks and hazards incidental to the activities of the event. You further release\, absolve\, hold harmless\, defend and indemnify the Rochester Birding Association\, Inc. and all individually named organizers\, leaders\, and participants of the event. Otherwise\, by attending this field trip you hereby grant permission to the Rochester Birding Association to take and publish photos or videos of you in connection with the event listed above\, with or without your name\, and for any lawful purpose including\, for example\, such purposes as publicity\, illustration\, advertising\, and web content.

SUMMARY:Hamlin Beach State Park
DESCRIPTION:We’ll start off walking flat wooded and brushy areas of the park\, looking for thrushes\, sparrows\, and maybe a half-hardy warbler or two. The remainder of the trip will be a series of stops on our way back to Rochester. Possible stops include plowed fields\, Salmon Creek overlooks\, and East Spit\, all depending on the time and conditions. \nDress appropriately for cooler weather along the lake and wear comfortable footwear. \nRestroom facilities are available at Hamlin Beach State Park. \nMeet at 8:00 a.m. in Hamlin Beach State Park\, Parking Lot 1. SUMMARY:October Meeting in Person & via Zoom with Speaker Adriaan Dokter\, Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, October 12 \nAdriaan Dokter\, Ph. D.\, Research associate\, Cornell Lab of Ornithology \nAdriaan Dokter studies the seasonal migrations of birds\, from the continental-scale movements of species to the fine-scale behavior of individuals flying through the atmosphere. He uses weather radar networks as well as individual tags to address questions in migration ecology\, including when and where birds migrate\, when and where birds die within the annual cycle\, and how shifting patterns in mortality and recruitment of young birds cause bird abundances to change. He also develops software tools for biologists using weather radar as a tool in their research. \nAdriaan Dokter is an ecologist with a background in physics. His research bridges the disciplines of ecology\, computer science\, physics\, and meteorology\, addressing questions about the effects of global change on the distribution and seasonal migration of birds. \nAfter receiving his Ph.D. at the Institute of Atomic and Molecular Physics in Amsterdam\, Dokter studied animal movement during postdoctoral appointments at the Netherlands Institute of Ecology\, the University of Amsterdam\, and the Netherlands Meteorological Institute. He has a continuing interest in understanding the role of individual decision making as a constituent of large-scale movement patterns\, which he explored in individual tracking studies on dark-bellied brent geese (Brant) and Eurasian Oystercatchers. \nLook for the Zoom link in your email a few days prior to the meeting. The Zoom Room will open at 6:45 PM.  Don’t wait until the last minute to sign on\, you might be left out!
