Members are welcome to move them closer together if comfortable. \nWhen you arrive\, please go the restroom and wash your hands thoroughly–20 seconds–before entering the fellowship hall. \nWe have a great program tonight with Christina Hoh speaking on winter raptor monitoring. We look forward to seeing you! \nLiz Magnanti\, President\, RBA \n\n\nUpstate New York is known for its harsh winters\, but a handful of raptor species specialize in cold and snowy weather and spend their winters right here in our communities. These charismatic raptors\, including Northern Harriers and Short-eared Owls\, are under a wide range of threats\, and NYSDEC\, its partners\, and volunteers work together to monitor these nomadic birds across their winter range in New York. We will discuss these birds’ natural history\, current trends\, our surveys\, and what we’ve learned over the last few years. Christina will also introduce the new DEC raptor technicians\, who will discuss how you can take part in monitoring and our ongoing effort to conserve these fascinating species. \nChristina Hoh first came upstate to attend RIT\, where she earned a B.S. in Biology and was introduced to avian research through bird banding on campus and at the Braddock Bay Bird Observatory. She then attended SUNY Brockport\, where she monitored Great Lakes coastal wetland birds and amphibians and studied migration physiology of White-throated Sparrows for her M.S. degree. She spent four years as a Wildlife Technician at NYSDEC\, where she monitored rare bird species and their habitat\, and now works as a DEC Habitat Biologist here in the Finger Lakes/Western New York region. \n\n  \n

SUMMARY:Lakeshore Plains West Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:A driving tour of the farm fields and open lands to the west of Rochester\, this trip will search for Snow Buntings\, Lapland Longspurs\, Northern Shrikes\, and hawks in the plains and country roads of western Monroe and Orleans Counties.  If the weather cooperates\, we may venture as far as Golden Hill State Park for a look at the lake and a short walk.  Dress warmly in layers; bring a snack and a thermos filled with cocoa.  We will drive along backcountry roads for a few hours\, stopping where we see bird activity.  Barring the possible walk at Golden Hill\, this trip should be handicapped-accessible. \nMeet at 9:00 a.m. at the Braddock Bay Park main parking lot.  Use the East Manitou Road exit from the Ontario State Parkway. \nExtra FRS radios and scopes would be very helpful.

SUMMARY:Little Lakes Christmas Bird Count – Saturday\, December 28th\, 2019
DESCRIPTION:This year marks the 120th count nationwide and the 68th count for the area. The count date is Saturday\, December 28\, 2019. Birds seen during the count week of December 25 to January 2 may be called in to the leaders for inclusion in the tally. \nThe center of the 15 mile diameter circle is the outlet of Hemlock Lake\, at the north end of the lake. The circle includes all of Conesus\, Hemlock\, Canadice and Honeoye Lakes\, and a large area to the north. The dividing line between the lakes is the height of land between the lakes. It is important for the coverage in each of the 5 areas to be as consistent as possible\, year to year\, for meaningful evaluation of the count area. Your participation in this worthy endeavor would be greatly appreciated. New birders can be paired up with experienced birders. SUMMARY:RBA Young Birder Event:  Christmas Bird Count - Seneca Park
DESCRIPTION:Participating in a Christmas Bird Count is an annual tradition for many birders\, and this will be the 116th CBC in Rochester.  In a Christmas Bird Count\, birders try to count as many birds as possible within a particular “count circle.”  Rochester’s circle is further subdivided into various sectors\, and different teams of people are assigned to count the birds in those sectors.  The Young Birders have our own sector – Seneca Park. \nEarly risers may start the day shortly before dawn as we try to lure in owls – screech are the most likely.  The real trip begins at 7:30 as we walk through the Seneca Park trails\, counting as we go.  We typically wrap up in two or three hours (depending on how cold it is)\, but folks are welcome to come and go when they please and stay as long as they are having fun. \nFor the really die-hard fans\, we may have opportunities to fill in with understaffed sectors later in the afternoon\, and everyone can join the final compilation in the evening to see how many birds were counted in the entire circle.

DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the company of other birders! Participate in citizen science! \nJoin us for the 120th Christmas Bird Count of the National Audubon Society and the 116th Rochester CBC. If you cannot bird in the field\, watch your feeder and phone results to the area leader. We’ll pair new observers with experienced birders. \nIn the evening of the count day\, we will gather at Newport Yacht Club (on Seneca Road in Irondequoit) at 6:00 p.m. for pizza (there will be a $5 charge to cover costs) and pot-luck followed by a species tally. Hot cocoa and cider will flow! SUMMARY:December:  Daniel Baldassarre - "Linking Behavior and Biodiversity in Birds"
DESCRIPTION:Daniel Baldassarre is interested in evolutionary biology and biodiversity\, and especially loves studying birds. To study avian biodiversity\, he focuses on small populations of birds and looks for connections between unusual behaviors and broad-scale patterns. For example\, how does the promiscuous sexual behavior of subspecies of the Australian Red-backed Fairy-wren affect whether or not they will interbreed? Does the Galápagos Vampire Finch’s bizarre habit of drinking blood mean it is on a trajectory to become a new species? In the southwestern USA\, is the Phainopepla really two cryptic species that breed in different locations at different times of the year? Come to his Rochester Birding Association talk to find out!\n\n\nDaniel Baldassarre is an Assistant Professor of Zoology in the SUNY Oswego Department of Biological Sciences. He grew up in Tully\, NY\, got his undergraduate degree at Syracuse University\, went to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology for my PhD\, and did postdoctoral research at the University of Miami and Princeton University. Daniel has been fortunate to study birds in Alaska\, Namibia\, New York\, Costa Rica\, Australia\, The Galápagos Islands\, and California. SUMMARY:RBA Young Birder Event:  Christmas Bird Count for Kids
DESCRIPTION:Come help us count the birds that make their winter homes at Braddock Bay!\nFor 119 years\, adults have counted birds every winter as part of the annual Christmas Bird Count\, and now it’s time for kids to join the fun!  The Christmas Bird Count for Kids is a family-friendly bird-watching event that builds bird identification skills and contributes to scientific bird count data. \nThe adventure starts with a short indoor lesson to introduce the local birds and to practice using binoculars.  We’ll then head outdoors to count the birds! \nExperienced birders will lead small teams of kids (and their parents) on different routes through the Braddock Bay Bird Observatory and surrounding area (the Owl Woods\, Manitou Beach Preserve\, the West Spit\, and long the lakeshore)\, as we attempt to find as many birds and as many species as possible.  Each survey route will be 45-90 minutes\, depending on the weather\, and at the end all the teams will meet up to tally their birds and to compare their sightings. \nREGISTER NOW AT EVENTBRITE >>\nWho can come?\nWe welcome both beginning and advanced birders up to age 18\, but note that very young children may not be suited for this particular event. All children must be accompanied by an adult\, and registration is required. \nWhat to bring?\nPlease come prepared for the weather and bring binoculars and a field guide if you have them. Some additional binoculars and guides will be available for use at the event. SUMMARY:RBA Young Birder Event:  Durand Eastman Park & Irondequoit Bay
DESCRIPTION:We’ll start by taking a walk through Durand Eastman Park.  We’ll likely see a mix of winter passerines like woodpeckers\, robins\, chickadees\, titmice\, Cedar Waxwings\, finches and cardinals\, but with a little luck they’ll be supplemented by something special.  Bohemian Waxwing\, Red Crossbill. White-winged Crossbill\, and Pine Grosbeak have all put appearances in the park in November! \nAfter we’ve worn out our walking legs\, we’ll take a quick drive to Irondequoit Bay Outlet where we should be able to get good looks at several species of waterfowl and gulls.  Long-tailed Ducks\, Bufflehead\, Common Goldeneye\, three mergansers\, and other ducks are sometimes joined by loons\, scaup\, scoters\, and grebes.  The platoons of Ring-billed Gulls are joined by Herring\, Bonaparte’s and Great Black-backed Gulls . . . and maybe even a gannet like the one the YB team saw in 2017.

SUMMARY:November:  Lucy Winters Durkin - "John James Audubon: Birds in Paint and Print"
DESCRIPTION:The images from John James Audubon’s Birds of America are familiar to most birders\, but a significant portion of Audubon’s work remains almost unknown – the written text that originally accompanied the illustrations.  In her profusely illustrated presentation\, Lucy Winters Durkin\, art historian\, lecturer and Audubon descendant\, will explore the closely observed and richly textured descriptions of the birds found in the Ornithological Biography\, reconnecting Audubon’s images and words. \nLucy Winters Durkin is a busy art historian and teacher here in the Rochester community.  She spends the greatest part of her time teaching art history in the Humanities Department at the Eastman School of Music\, where\, in her words\, she is responsible for inflicting culture on unsuspecting undergraduates.  She also teaches art history programs at the Memorial Art Gallery\, offered to the community through the Creative Workshop. \nLucy holds a B.A. from Smith College in European History and a Masters’ degree from the Williams College Graduate Program in the History of Art.  Her lecturing career has taken her from Tokyo to Cornell University with many stops in between.  She also authored and taught an on-line course\, “The Museum Goer’s Guide to Art” for Barnes & Noble.  In a different aspect of her career\, Lucy works with musical groups and individual performers in creating programs that combine music and visuals\, which have been performed in multiple venues around the country.

DESCRIPTION:Why a wastewater treatment plant?  Open water and a great location mean that this spot appears regularly on the fall birding lists. We will drive on the banks of the ponds\, getting out wherever the birds are congregating. Discover the great opportunity this spot (and its helpful staff) offers. \nMeet at 9:00 a.m. at the Wastewater Treatment Plant at the end of Industrial Blvd\, which is off Pearl St. (Rte. 33) at the western edge of the city of Batavia. From the NYS Thruway I-90 at Batavia\, exit 48\, go south on Rt. 98 into the city of Batavia. At the second light (candy store)\, make a right turn onto Pearl St (or Genesee St)\, which is Rt. 33. Go west approximately 0.5 miles to Industrial Blvd. and make a left. Proceed south past the railroad tracks and straight up the hill and through the open gates to the entrance building of the treatment plant (first building on your left). Or\, from Rochester\, take I-490 W\, to Exit 2 (Rt. 33 west). Follow Rt. 33 west through Batavia; turn left onto Pearl St (Rt. 33)\, stay right at roundabout\, continue on Rt. 33\, 0.5 miles to Industrial Blvd\, turn left. \nWe will carpool from the Plant offices.

SUMMARY:Hamlin Beach State Park Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:We’ll start off walking wooded and brushy areas of the park\, looking for thrushes\, sparrows\, and maybe a half-hardy warbler or two.  After that\, we’ll stop by the lake watch to view ducks on the water and in flight\, learning about the Lake Watch process as we share scopes. Dress appropriately for cooler weather along the lake\, and wear comfortable footwear. \nMeet at 8:00 a.m. in Hamlin Beach State Park\, Parking Lot 1. Bring a snack or have lunch at Docksiders Pub & Oven on Manitou Beach Road and support a local business that lets us use his dock for viewing.

SUMMARY:October:  Julie Hart - "NY Breeding Bird Atlas III: Engaging all birders from 2020-2024"
DESCRIPTION:It has been 20 years since the last breeding bird atlas in New York State and a lot has changed! The third atlas will take place from 2020-2024 and involve thousands of volunteers from across the state. This talk will cover the history of the atlas\, the importance of atlas data\, and how you can get involved. Learn how the third atlas will differ from previous atlases\, including how we will be using eBird for data entry. eBird will make it easier to track progress and allow anyone to enter data anywhere. Atlasing is a great excuse to explore new areas and provides an intimate look into the daily lives of birds. Whether you are a beginner or advanced birder\, this unique opportunity will strengthen your birdwatching skills while contributing valuable data to a large conservation-oriented project. \nJulie Hart is a native Vermonter who started birding while working as a bird conservation intern with National Audubon\, Audubon New York\, and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. She traveled for several years doing field work around the globe before returning to VT to serve as the coordinator for Mountain Birdwatch with the Vermont Center for Ecostudies. She spent several years chasing Bicknell’s Thrush around the mountains of the Northeast and Hispaniola before moving to Wyoming to continue her education. She received her Master’s degree studying the impacts of climate change on Cassia Crossbill in southern Idaho. She is now settled in the Albany area where she is the Project Coordinator for the third Breeding Bird Atlas in NY under SUNY ESF\, New York Natural Heritage Program. In her travels she has participated in two bird atlases and considers atlasing her favorite type of birding.

SUMMARY:Ganondagan State Historic Site
DESCRIPTION:We’ll meet in the main parking lot off County Road 41/Boughton Hill Road at 9:00 a.m. The lot is situated below the new museum at 7000 County Road 41\, Victor\, NY 14564. (From Rt. 444 from Victor\, turn right onto Boughton Hill Road and go down the hill. The main parking lot will be on your right.) \nFrom there we will carpool down Rt. 41 about 0.5 mi to a small parking area on the left. We will look for sparrows in the brush and other migrating birds near the parking area\, and then walk about two miles round trip on the mostly flat Seneca Trail beside fields and in the woods along a stream to the Bobolink field. \n  \n
