SUMMARY:Sandra L. Frankel Nature Park (Brickyard Trail)
DESCRIPTION:The wide\, flat\, multi-use Brickyard Trail winds between Elmwood Avenue and Westfall Road in Brighton. With woods at both ends and ponds and marshes in the middle\, it provides a nice variety of bird habitat. We will walk the full length of the trail and back (1.7 miles) to look for migrating fall warblers\, sparrows\, wrens\, and finches. There might even be a Belted Kingfisher or Osprey hanging around. Dress for the weather and bring binoculars. Insect repellent may be needed for the wooded sections. No restrooms. \nMeet at 7:30 a.m. in the parking area near the entrance to Temple B’rith Kodesh (2131 Elmwood Ave.); the trail entrance is nearby. DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, September 10\, 2026\nSpeaker:  Kristin Brunk\, PhD – “Passive Acoustic Monitoring: Studying Nature Through Sound” \n\n\n\nBird song has been a source of inspiration and joy to people for centuries\, but it can also provide clues about bird community health and insights into the success (or failure) of habitat management for birds. Passive acoustic monitoring – using sound to study nature – is a rapidly-advancing technique that’s increasingly being used to monitor bird populations in many contexts. In California’s Sierra Nevada\, researchers are using passive acoustic monitoring at unprecedented scales to improve habitat management for birds in the context of rapidly changing climate and fire regimes.\n\nKristin Brunk\, PhD\, is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Oslo\, in Oslo\, Norway\, and was previously a postdoctoral fellow at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology in Ithaca\, NY. Kristin’s research lies at the intersection of conservation\, quantitative ecology\, and behavioral ecology\, and the questions that most interest her are those with implications both for wildlife conservation and for ecological theory. Kristin is a field ecologist at heart\, and in addition to working in the Sierra Nevada\, Kristin has conducted fieldwork in a wide variety of landscapes including the old growth redwood forest in Big Basin Redwoods State Park\, the ground-nesting seabird paradise of Johnston Atoll (a tiny\, remote Pacific wildlife refuge)\, the swamps and marshes of the ACE basin in South Carolina\, the volcanic shores of Isla Española in the Galapagos\, and the mountain birch forests of Norway.\n\n\n\nLook for the Zoom link in your email a few days prior to the meeting. SUMMARY:Braddock Bay East Spit
DESCRIPTION:The East Spit of Braddock Bay is a well-known spot for migrating shorebirds in late summer. Herons\, eagles\, Osprey and early warbler migrants are also possible. The trail is a woodland path between Lake Ontario and the Braddock Bay Marshes. We will walk out to the end of the spit and back\, about 1 mile. The trail is narrow and has uneven\, rocky footing in places. Sturdy waterproof shoes or boots and bug spray will be needed. Crossing the channel to the barrier island will be optional and dependent on water levels. Restrooms are available next to the Marina building. \nMeet at 8:00 a.m. in the East Spit parking lot beyond Westport Marina at Braddock Bay. Note: You must drive through the Marina to reach the East Spit parking lot. DESCRIPTION:We’ll look for migrant ducks and various passerines in this “get to know Iroquois in autumn” trip. DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, October 8\, 2026\n – Mike Ward\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBiography: \n\n\nDr. Mike Ward is originally from Jacksonville\, IL and received his PhD from the University of Illinois\, Urbana-Champaign in 2004.  He is currently the Stuart L. and Nancy J. Levenick Chair in Sustainability in the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences\, in the College of Agricultural\, Consumer\, and Environmental Sciences at the University of Illinois and an Ornithologist at the Illinois Natural History Survey. Dr. Ward conducts research on avian ecology and conservation throughout the Midwest as well as in Texas\, Florida\, Mexico\, Costa Rica\, Colombia\, and Cuba. He is a global leader in the use of automated telemetry to investigate the movements (e.g.\, migration) and behavior of birds. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers and won multiple awards for his research. He is also on many technical committees most of which are charged with informing management and policy to better conserve the environment. DESCRIPTION:Over 130 bird species have been observed at HANA including more than 70 that nest in the diverse habitats found there. During this fall field trip we expect to see various species of migrating birds such as ducks\, kinglets\, warblers and thrushes\, and summer resident birds getting ready to migrate south. As a bonus\, the fall colors should be in full glorious display. Our approximately two-mile walk over mostly flat trails will explore about 250 acres at HANA and may include some wet spots if it has been a wet fall. We will drive on the banks of the ponds\, getting out wherever the birds are congregating. Discover the great opportunity this spot (and its helpful staff) offers. DESCRIPTION:The Niagara River area is famous for the variety and number of gulls in winter. Join us on our birding venture along the Niagara River in the US and possibly Canada – if rarities are being seen there. We will start at Lake Ontario and work our way south to the Falls. Our focus will be on waterfowl and gulls\, including Bonaparte’s Gull and Little Gull\, with possible late migrating Common Tern\, with additional stops for Red-headed Woodpecker\, Black Vulture and late migrating passerines. SUMMARY:Conesus Lake Area
DESCRIPTION:We’ll be looking for Tundra Swans\, Canvasback\, Redhead and other waterfowl. This trip is a combination of driving\, stopping at overlooks and short walks on mostly level dirt trails and dikes. Length is about 1.5 mile walking. Dress warmly and in layers. Restrooms are available at Vitale Park only. \nMeet at 8:00 a.m. at Vitale Park on Route 20A in Lakeville. The park entrance is by the Lakeville post office on the south (lake) side of 20A and across the street from Smith’s Hardware. SUMMARY:Beginner Birder Trip – Nations Road
DESCRIPTION:Sharpen your skills on wintering hawks and Short-eared Owls. Other wintering birds such as Horned Larks\, Snow Buntings\, and Lapland Longspurs are often present. This trip is a combination of driving and viewing at stops along roads. Length about .5 mile walking along the road. Restroom facilities are available at Tops. \nMeet at 2:00 p.m. at the Tops Plaza in Avon on Routes 5 and 20\, 2 miles west of I-390. The roads in this area are narrow and busy. Please plan to carpool from Tops\, as the number of cars allowed will be limited to ten. Bring binoculars\, dress warmly and in layers. SUMMARY:December:  Roger J. Masse\, Ph.D. - "Young Forest Bird Conservation"
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, December 10\, 2026\n – Roger J. Masse\, Ph.D.\n\n\nDuring this seminar\, Roger will be discussing issues related to young forest bird conservation in the Northeast\, USA.  Young forest bird conservation has been the focus of many recent initiatives across New York and the broader Northeast.  Populations of these species\, such as Eastern towhee\, blue-winged warbler\, and American woodcock require active habitat management to thrive on contemporary landscapes.  During his presentation\, Roger will outline historical forest change in the Northeast\, discuss why young forests are important\, overview examples of young forest initiatives\, and summarize the types of species that benefit from young forest management.\n\n\n\nBiography: \n\n\nDr. Roger J. Masse is a broadly-trained wildlife biologist with particular interests in undergraduate education\, wildlife habitat use and management\, and birds.  He earned a BS in Wildlife Biology from University of Vermont\, a MS in Natural Resources from Delaware State University\, and a PhD in Environmental Science from University of Rhode Island.  A common theme throughout his formal training was an interest in studying birds.  In Vermont\, he worked with grassland songbirds during an undergraduate research experience; in Delaware\, he studied wood thrush populations and other forest-breeding birds; in Rhode Island\, he studied habitat use and behavior of American woodcock and other young forest birds.  Roger currently works as an associate professor of wildlife management at SUNY Cobleskill where he provides his students with hands-on experience related to wildlife studies including songbird and American woodcock capture\, measurement\, and banding among other topics.\n\n\n\n\nLook for the Zoom link in your email a few days prior to the meeting.
