SUMMARY:Batavia Wastewater Treatment Plant Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Why a wastewater treatment plant?  Open water and a great location mean that this spot appears regularly on the fall birding lists. We will drive on the banks of the ponds\, getting out wherever the birds are congregating. Discover the great opportunity this spot (and its helpful staff) offers. \nMeet at 9:00 a.m. at the Wastewater Treatment Plant at the end of Industrial Blvd\, which is off Pearl St. (Rte. 33) at the western edge of the city of Batavia. SUMMARY:October: Julie Hart - "NY Breeding Bird Atlas III: Engaging all birders from 2020-2024"
DESCRIPTION:It has been 20 years since the last breeding bird atlas in New York State and a lot has changed! The third atlas will take place from 2020-2024 and involve thousands of volunteers from across the state. This talk will cover the history of the atlas\, the importance of atlas data\, and how you can get involved. Learn how the third atlas will differ from previous atlases\, including how we will be using eBird for data entry. eBird will make it easier to track progress and allow anyone to enter data anywhere. Atlasing is a great excuse to explore new areas and provides an intimate look into the daily lives of birds. Whether you are a beginner or advanced birder\, this unique opportunity will strengthen your birdwatching skills while contributing valuable data to a large conservation-oriented project. \nJulie Hart is a native Vermonter who started birding while working as a bird conservation intern with National Audubon\, Audubon New York\, and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. She traveled for several years doing field work around the globe before returning to VT to serve as the coordinator for Mountain Birdwatch with the Vermont Center for Ecostudies. She spent several years chasing Bicknell’s Thrush around the mountains of the Northeast and Hispaniola before moving to Wyoming to continue her education. She received her Master’s degree studying the impacts of climate change on Cassia Crossbill in southern Idaho. She is now settled in the Albany area where she is the Project Coordinator for the third Breeding Bird Atlas in NY under SUNY ESF\, New York Natural Heritage Program. In her travels she has participated in two bird atlases and considers atlasing her favorite type of birding.

SUMMARY:RBA Young Birder Event: Highland Park
DESCRIPTION:If you’ve been to the Lilac Festival\, then you’ve been to Highland Park.  Is it a little weird here to bird in September?  Maybe – but someone has to do it\, and this will be a nice relaxing trip after the craziness of the Muckrace the weekend before.  We’ll take a walk around the reservoir and through the pinetum\, and we may even head across the street to the Lily Pond and the Sunken Garden.

SUMMARY:CANCELLED: Braddock Bay East Spit Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:This trip was CANCELLED due to high Lake Ontario water levels.\n*** \nThe newly constructed barrier beach off what is known as the East Spit has become a major attraction for migrating shore birds.  In order to view them\, however\, we will need to get to the island by wading across a small channel that can be knee-deep water depending on the water level and wave action.  Wear boots or water shoes (not barefoot) and shorts or pants that roll up. \nMeet at 8:00 a.m. at the north end of the Westpoint Marina parking lot.  Exit the Ontario State Parkway at E. Manitou Road\, pass the Braddock Bay Park entrance and turn left at the Westpoint Marina (105 E Manitou Rd\, Rochester\, NY 14612).  Drive SLOWLY through the marina to get to the parking lot at the end of the lane.  Park ONLY in a parking spot\, not in the turn-around!  Additional parking is available in the public area just before the marina. \nExtra spotting scopes would be helpful.

SUMMARY:Beginner Trip: Charlotte & Badgerow Park
DESCRIPTION:We’ll be looking for shorebirds\, warblers\, and other fall migrants in Greece and environs.  We’ll look for gulls in many plumages and some shorebirds\, too at Charlotte Beach.  George W. Badgerow Park is a small area that offers good vantage points along pleasant trails\, with the occasional surprise rarity. \nMeet at 8:00 a.m. at Ontario Beach Park in Charlotte in the northeast corner of the parking lot\, beside the Genesee River outlet. Extra spotting scopes would be very helpful. \nNote: This is a field trip for beginners. New birders should feel free to join these trips regardless of experience level: bring binoculars if you have them\, and we will share our scopes. The pace & focus of Beginner Trips may not be satisfying for experienced birders. Our Beginner Trips focus on teaching identification skills\, learning new habitats\, and answering questions. Experienced birders are welcome but may be pressed into service as educators!

SUMMARY:RBA Young Birder Event: Mendon Ponds Park - Quaker Pond Trail
DESCRIPTION:The Quaker Pond Trail at Mendon Ponds Park is a 2.7-mile loop that circles a large marshy area and pond.  We may pick up lingering migrants\, but we’ll be especially on the alert for local nesting birds setting up territories.  Woodpeckers are practically a given\, as are blackbirds\, finches and sparrows.  We may be able to coax a chickadee or titmouse to steal seeds from our hands.

Of course\, it gets an early start!  We’ll look for birds not frequently seen on other trips\, such as Acadian Flycatcher and Barred Owl.  We’ll do a fair amount of walking–one somewhat steep but short forest trail and a dirt road down to the river level\, as well as some roadside birding. \nMeet at the west side (inside the park near the Rt. 36 entrance) Mt. SUMMARY:Bergen Swamp Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:A trip to this unique place is by special permit from the Bergen Swamp Preservation Society and will feature nesting birds.  The mix of vegetation zones provides secluded nesting habitat for the usual western N.Y. species as well as those more characteristic of the Canadian zone such as Blue-headed Vireo\, Hermit Thrush\, Magnolia\, Blackburnian\, Black-and-White\, Canada and Nashville Warblers. \nThis is a walking trip of 3–5 miles on variably wet and slippery corduroy trails that must be followed closely for safety reasons and because of the fragile habitat. Sturdy boots (rather than sneakers) are STRONGLY recommended and hiking or ski poles may be useful.  Massasauga rattlesnakes are VERY rarely encountered. \nParking at the trailhead is limited\, so we will meet in the parking lot of the 7-11 Gas Station at the junction of Routes 33 and 19 at 7:30 a.m. \nDrive about 20 miles west of Rochester on I-490 to exit 2.  Turn right (west) on Route 33 and go about one mile to the junction with Route 19.  Turn left onto Route 19\, then make an immediate left turn into the parking lot.
