SUMMARY:Montezuma Muckrace - Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge
DESCRIPTION:This is it – the biggest bird race in upstate New York!  Organized by the Friends of the Montezuma Wetlands Complex\, the Muckrace is a 24-hour birding competition in which teams try to see as many species of birds as possible on the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge.  In reality\, the Muckrace is a cleverly disguised fundraiser\, and the RBA Young Birders have participated for many years.  If you are interested\, be sure to let us know!

SUMMARY:Beginner Trip: Charlotte & Badgerow Park
DESCRIPTION:We’ll be looking for shorebirds\, warblers\, and other fall migrants in Greece and environs.  We’ll look for gulls in many plumages and some shorebirds\, too at Charlotte Beach.  George W. Badgerow Park is a small area that offers good vantage points along pleasant trails\, with the occasional surprise rarity. \nMeet at 8:00 a.m. at Ontario Beach Park in Charlotte in the northeast corner of the parking lot\, beside the Genesee River outlet. Extra spotting scopes would be very helpful. \nNote: This is a field trip for beginners. New birders should feel free to join these trips regardless of experience level: bring binoculars if you have them\, and we will share our scopes. The pace & focus of Beginner Trips may not be satisfying for experienced birders. Our Beginner Trips focus on teaching identification skills\, learning new habitats\, and answering questions. Experienced birders are welcome but may be pressed into service as educators!

SUMMARY:RBA Young Birder Event: Mendon Ponds Park - Quaker Pond Trail
DESCRIPTION:The Quaker Pond Trail at Mendon Ponds Park is a 2.7-mile loop that circles a large marshy area and pond.  We may pick up lingering migrants\, but we’ll be especially on the alert for local nesting birds setting up territories.  Woodpeckers are practically a given\, as are blackbirds\, finches and sparrows.  We may be able to coax a chickadee or titmouse to steal seeds from our hands.

SUMMARY:Letchworth State Park Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:This trip frequently boasts more birds than any other RBA field trip. Of course\, it gets an early start!  We’ll look for birds not frequently seen on other trips\, such as Acadian Flycatcher and Barred Owl.  We’ll do a fair amount of walking–one somewhat steep but short forest trail and a dirt road down to the river level\, as well as some roadside birding. \nMeet at the west side (inside the park near the Rt. 36 entrance) Mt. Morris Dam Overlook parking lot at 5:30 a.m. Pack a lunch and snacks as the trip will likely last well into mid-afternoon. \nExtra spotting scopes and FRS radios would be very helpful.

SUMMARY:Bergen Swamp Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:A trip to this unique place is by special permit from the Bergen Swamp Preservation Society and will feature nesting birds.  The mix of vegetation zones provides secluded nesting habitat for the usual western N.Y. species as well as those more characteristic of the Canadian zone such as Blue-headed Vireo\, Hermit Thrush\, Magnolia\, Blackburnian\, Black-and-White\, Canada and Nashville Warblers. \nThis is a walking trip of 3–5 miles on variably wet and slippery corduroy trails that must be followed closely for safety reasons and because of the fragile habitat. Sturdy boots (rather than sneakers) are STRONGLY recommended and hiking or ski poles may be useful.  Massasauga rattlesnakes are VERY rarely encountered. \nParking at the trailhead is limited\, so we will meet in the parking lot of the 7-11 Gas Station at the junction of Routes 33 and 19 at 7:30 a.m. \nDrive about 20 miles west of Rochester on I-490 to exit 2.  Turn right (west) on Route 33 and go about one mile to the junction with Route 19.  Turn left onto Route 19\, then make an immediate left turn into the parking lot.

SUMMARY:May: Eli J. Knapp\, PhD - "Birds Become Stories"
DESCRIPTION:Some spectacular birds turn the people who see them into birders. Others have a power even beyond that. Their unexpected appearance\, special attributes\, or sheer rarity attract birders to chase them\, often forsaking all else. Sometimes the birders get their bird. Just as often\, they miss. Succeed or fail\, every birder gets a tale to tell. Come listen as Eli Knapp shares excerpts from his new book\, The Delightful Horror of Family Birding. You’ll find out how birds teach us\, inspire us\, and best of all—become stories to share. \nEli J. Knapp\, PhD\, has had a fascination with wildlife ever since obsessively counting deer on his bus rides to school every morning as a kid.  His wildlife interests have put him into kayaks\, hot air balloons\, dilapidated land rovers\, and many pairs of hiking boots in search of new species and experiences.  When not watching birds\, Eli teaches courses in conservation biology\, wildlife behavior\, human ecology\, and Swahili where he is a tenured professor of intercultural studies and biology at Houghton College\, in western New York.  Each spring he takes 20-30 students to East Africa where he directs an annual study abroad semester.  His research interests spawn out of a three-year stint living in Serengeti National Park\, where he studied the coexistence of people and wildlife around protected areas.  Eli now enjoys sharing nature with his wife and three children\, and has chronicled his adventures in his first book: The Delightful Horror of Family Birding: Sharing Nature with the Next Generation (Torrey House Press)
