SUMMARY:Beginner Birder Trip: Owl Woods & Hawk Watch Site - Registration Opens March 19\, 2022
DESCRIPTION:We’ll look primarily for our smallest visiting owl\, the Northern Saw-whet\, which returns to this spot on a yearly basis.  Long-eared Owls generally put in an appearance\, too\, although they’re quite shy and great at hiding.  After the owl walk\, we’ll head to the Hawk Watch site to learn how to identify raptors on the wing.  At this time of year\, we might witness spectacular flights of thousands of raptors!  The Owl Woods trails are flat and likely will be wet and muddy. Boots are strongly recommended – they’re almost mandatory! No restrooms available. Bring binoculars and\, if you have them\, spotting scopes. \nMeet at 8:30 a.m. in the parking lot on the right side of Manitou Beach Road across from the Owl Woods trail head. \nNote: This is a field trip for beginners. New birders should feel free to join these trips regardless of experience level: bring binoculars if you have them. The pace & focus of Beginner Trips may not be satisfying for experienced birders. Our Beginner Trips focus on teaching identification skills\, learning new habitats\, and answering questions. Experienced birders are welcome but may be pressed into service as educators! \nCOVID-19 Policies and Procedures \nThe Rochester Birding Association has instituted the following procedures for all field trips for the duration of the coronavirus pandemic. By registering for a field trip\, you acknowledge that you have read and will abide by these policies. \nRegistration Policies: \n\nAdvance registration through Eventbrite is required in order to attend the trip. NYS guidelines for the allowable number of attendees at an outdoor gathering have eased considerably\, but out of an abundance of caution\, we will continue capacity limits that will be determined on a trip-by-trip basis.\nIndividuals who did not pre-register will not be allowed to attend the field trip.\nShould you decide not to attend the trip\, we encourage you to cancel your reservation before 1:00 PM the day before the trip to make room for others. Canceling is easily done through the Eventbrite website; see your confirmation email for details.\n\nHealth Screening Considerations: \n\nFull contact information is required at registration in case contact tracing is requested.\nNo one who has a temperature of 100.4F or greater (without having taken any fever-reducing medications) should attend.\nNo one who has anyCOVID-19 symptoms (fever\, cough\, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing\, chills\, muscle pain\, sore throat\, or loss of taste or smell) should attend.\nNo one who has tested positive for COVID-19 in the past 14 days or who has been instructed to self-isolate or quarantine should attend.\nNo one who has been in close (within 6 feet) or proximate (same closed environment\, but greater than 6 feet) contact with anyone who has tested positive for COVID-19 or who has had symptoms of COVID-19 within the past 14 days\, should attend.\nNo one who has traveled or who lives with someone who has traveled to a country or state on the New York coronavirus travel advisory list in the last 14 days should attend.\nParticipants who test positive for the coronavirus within 14 days after attending a field trip are encouraged to contact the RBA.\n\nSocial Distancing and Safety Best Practices \n\nMask wearing is required for participants who are not fully vaccinated; it is optional\, but encouraged for those fully vaccinated.\nWe will continue to encourage social distancing whether or not a mask is worn.\nAs long as participants continue to socially-distance\, we will allow scope sharing.\nParticipants are encouraged to keep hand sanitizer with them in case of accidental contact.\n\nWaive and Release from Liability: By registering for this field trip you acknowledge that you assume all risks and hazards incidental to the activities of the event\, including potential exposure to the novel coronavirus. You further release\, absolve\, hold harmless\, defend and indemnify the Rochester Birding Association\, Inc. and all individually named organizers\, leaders\, and participants of the event. In case of injury\, you hereby waive all claims against all organizers\, leaders\, and participants. \nPhoto/Video Waiver: If you do not consent to have your image used by the RBA in the manner next described\, check the appropriate box on the registration form. SUMMARY:April Meeting via Zoom with Speaker Holly Merker - "Ornitherapy: For Your Mind\, Body\, and Soul"
DESCRIPTION:Watching birds: not only fun\, but good for you!  Learn why getting your daily dose of Ornitherapy is just what the doctor ordered…. \nOrnitherapy leads to a more mindful approach to the observation of birds\, benefiting our mind\, body\, and soul. \nWe’re pushed and pulled in many directions\, no matter our age. If we allow birds and nature to slow us down\, we are practicing a form of “self-care”. Research shows that exposure to nature actively reduces stress\, depression\, and anxiety\, while helping build a stronger heart and immune system. \nBirds are gateways into deeper experiences with nature\, magnifying these benefits. Through observation\, we can learn not only about birds\, but gain insight into our own lives while exploring our connection to the world around us. This fosters stewardship and bolsters conservation. \nWithin the program\, we’ll delve into our connections to birds\, how to practice Ornitherapy for optimal benefits\, and learn about the latest research in the power of nature for overall well-being. Come listen to how watching birds can bring you more than just the enjoyment. \nLook for the Zoom link in your email a few days prior to the meeting. The Zoom Room will open at 6:45 PM.  Don’t wait until the last minute to sign on\, you might be left out! \nHolly Merker with Burrowing Owl \nHolly Merker has a background in art therapy\, but today employs birds and nature toward the same goals of well-being in her work as an environmental educator and birding guide. Holly has worked as a professional birding instructor for National Audubon\, the American Birding Association\, Hillstar Nature\, and many other organizations. \nPassionate about connecting young people to birds\, she co-founded the Frontiers in Ornithology Symposium\, and has facilitated many young birder groups and teen birding camps. Dedicated to bird conservation\, she has been state coordinator/reviewer for the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s eBird Pennsylvania since 2005\, and a two-term voting member of the PA Ornithological Records Committee\, as well as the Committee Chair. \nHolly is lead author of the book Ornitherapy: For Your Body\, Mind\, and Soul (along with co-authors Richard Crossley and Sophie Crossley\, Crossley Books\, 2021) and is currently promoting the practice of Ornitherapy and providing workshops and programs across the U.S. \nIn her free time\, Holly spends every possible moment practicing Ornitherapy herself\, which she credits in helping her defeat breast cancer\, restoring her health mentally and physically.

DESCRIPTION:With spring in full swing\, come to one of Rochester’s best-kept birding secrets: Cobbs Hill Park’s Washington Grove. SUMMARY:Beginner Birder Trip: Lakeshore Warbler Hotspots - Registration Opens April 30\, 2022
DESCRIPTION:The shoreline of Lake Ontario is a haven for migrating warblers and other passerines.  We will stop at several areas where these birds tend to congregate in spring.  Learn the basics of identifying our most colorful migrants on this trip.  We’ll be looking for color patterns\, song\, and the distinctive behaviors to enhance identification skills with these fast-moving beauties.  Though flat\, trails may be very muddy.  Waterproof boots are strongly recommended! Dress for the weather and bring binoculars. \nNo restrooms available. \nMeet at 7:30 a.m. at the parking lot behind Lakeview Community Church\, 30 Long Pond Road in Greece (near Edgemere Drive). SUMMARY:Taylor Marsh Field Trip Marsh (Joint trip with the Bergen Swamp Preservation Society) - Registration Opens April 30\, 2022
DESCRIPTION:Taylor Marsh is a preserve owned by the Bergen Swamp Preservation Society and located in Ontario County north of Honeoye Lake.  It is best known for marsh birds\, including both American and Least Bittern and Virginia Rail.  However\, the star attraction is the 2-3 Sandhill Cranes that have been present in this area all year around for many years.  They are occasionally heard at Taylor\, although seldom seen.  Taylor also has brush-shrub and wooded upland habitat with a good variety of spring migrants and breeding birds.  An adjacent hay field is home to Bobolinks and meadowlarks.  It has a checklist of well over 100 species\, and we usually rack up 40-50 in just a couple of hours. This is mostly a flat trail\, which can be muddy\, but has one small stream with steep banks to cross. Waterproof boots are advisable. \nNo restrooms available. \nMeet at 8:00 a.m. at the Taylor Marsh parking area on the west side of Allen’s Hill Road just south of Nighan Hill Road.  From Rochester\, take I-390 south to the Avon exit.  Turn left onto Routes 5&20 and go east.  In the town of Lima\, turn right onto Route 15 A and follow it south.  Turn left onto Richmond Mills Road (Livingston County Road 41).  It becomes Ontario County Road 15.  Follow County Road 15 past County Road 37 and turn right at the next stop sign onto Allen’s Hill Road.  (There is no road sign at the intersection.) \nCOVID-19 Policies and Procedures \nThe Rochester Birding Association has instituted the following procedures for all field trips for the duration of the coronavirus pandemic. SUMMARY:Letchworth State Park Field Trip - Registration Opens May 29\, 2022
DESCRIPTION:This trip frequently boasts more birds than any other RBA field trip. Of course\, it gets an early start!  We’ll look for birds not frequently seen on other trips\, such as Acadian Flycatcher. We’ll do a fair amount of walking: one somewhat steep but short forest trail and a dirt road down to the river level\, as well as some roadside birding. Restrooms available at several locations along the way. \nMeet at 5:30 a.m. at the Dam Overlook Gifts and Grill parking lot (use the Route 36 entrance to Letchworth Park).  Pack a lunch and snacks\, as the trip will likely last well into mid-afternoon. Spotting scopes would be very useful. \nCOVID-19 Policies and Procedures \nThe Rochester Birding Association has instituted the following procedures for all field trips for the duration of the coronavirus pandemic.
