SUMMARY:December:  Roger J. Masse\, Ph.D. - "Young Forest Bird Conservation"
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, December 10\, 2026\n – Roger J. Masse\, Ph.D.\n\n\nDuring this seminar\, Roger will be discussing issues related to young forest bird conservation in the Northeast\, USA.  Young forest bird conservation has been the focus of many recent initiatives across New York and the broader Northeast.  Populations of these species\, such as Eastern towhee\, blue-winged warbler\, and American woodcock require active habitat management to thrive on contemporary landscapes.  During his presentation\, Roger will outline historical forest change in the Northeast\, discuss why young forests are important\, overview examples of young forest initiatives\, and summarize the types of species that benefit from young forest management.\n\n\n\nBiography: \n\n\nDr. Roger J. Masse is a broadly-trained wildlife biologist with particular interests in undergraduate education\, wildlife habitat use and management\, and birds.  He earned a BS in Wildlife Biology from University of Vermont\, a MS in Natural Resources from Delaware State University\, and a PhD in Environmental Science from University of Rhode Island.  A common theme throughout his formal training was an interest in studying birds.  In Vermont\, he worked with grassland songbirds during an undergraduate research experience; in Delaware\, he studied wood thrush populations and other forest-breeding birds; in Rhode Island\, he studied habitat use and behavior of American woodcock and other young forest birds.  Roger currently works as an associate professor of wildlife management at SUNY Cobleskill where he provides his students with hands-on experience related to wildlife studies including songbird and American woodcock capture\, measurement\, and banding among other topics.\n\n\n\n\nLook for the Zoom link in your email a few days prior to the meeting. SUMMARY:February:  Joan Strassmann - "The Social Lives of Birds: Flocks\, Communes\, and Families"
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, February 11\, 2027\n – Joan Strassmann\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat is that bird doing? Whether they are foraging in flocks on a beach\, warning of approaching predators\, or caring for their young\, something is always happening. And it is likely to be social. Though many interactions seem cooperative\, self-interest has a large role in avian sociality\, from the selfish herd to parents reserving time to explore other mating opportunities. These and many other stories are told in Joan Strassmann’s latest book\, The Social Lives of Birds: Flocks\, Communes\, and Families\, and will be shared in this presentation. \n\n\nJoan Strassmann is a professor of Biology at Washington University in St. Louis where she asks\nwhy diverse organisms sometimes work together and what keeps cheaters from undermining\ngroup life.  She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and a fellow of the American\nAcademy of Arts and Sciences.\n\n\n\n\nLook for the Zoom link in your email a few days prior to the meeting. DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, September 9\, 2027\nSpeaker:  Jenn Lodi-Smith\, Ph.D. \n\n\n\nThe Spark Bird Project is an ongoing participatory community social science initiative designed to gather\, share\, and study the stories of people’s passion for birds while gaining scientific insights into a critical piece in the ecology of birds: birders themselves. The project leverages the tools of social science to study spark bird stories\, with research findings going directly back to community partners to inform their efforts towards engaging people in birding. The knowledge\ngained from The Spark Bird Project helps to craft inclusive experiences that can facilitate spark bird moments for the benefit of the birding community\, the new birder\, the economy\, and – most importantly – the birds and our world. By understanding what hooks and sustains birders\, The Spark Bird Project helps grow the constituency of individuals creatively working to conserve and protect our planet. \nJenn Lodi-Smith\, Ph.D.\, the founder and director of The Spark Bird Project\, is a Professor of Psychology at Canisius University and scholar-in-residence with the Roger Tory Peterson Institute. Jenn has been using mixed methods to longitudinally study identity development for over 20 years\, most recently in the context of the transformative power of spark bird experiences. SUMMARY:December:  Randi Minetor - "The Plumage Trade: How Fashion Killed a Warden\, and How Tea Parties Killed Fashion"
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, December 9\, 2027\n – Randi Minetor \nHere is the story of the people who nearly wiped out Florida’s abundant long-legged waders in a drive to profit from their plumes\, and the people who gave their time and their lives to stop them. A game warden took a bullet to protect egrets\, another one vanished with barely a trace\, and two women in Boston became turn-of-the-twentieth-century influencers to save the birds. The result: the first official chapter of the National Audubon Society\, and an end to the plumage trade. \nRandi Minetor discovered the stories of the people who defended birds from plumage hunters while working on her book Death in the Everglades (Lyons Press\, 2024). A working writer for more than 40 years\, ​Randi has produced more than 100 books on topics ranging from deaths in the national parks to finding and identifying birds in states across the country.
