SUMMARY:March Meeting in Person & via Zoom with Speaker Jonathan Cohen\, Ph.D. - "Efforts to maintain a newly colonized Piping Plover (Charadrius melodus) population on Lake Ontario\, NY”
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, March 9\, 2023\n7:00 p.m.\nAsbury First United Methodist Church\n1050 East Avenue \nJonathan Cohen\, Ph.D.\nAssociate Professor of Wildlife Ecology and Management\nSUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry \nThe federally endangered Piping Plover (Charadrius melodus)\, once common in the Great Lakes\, became extirpated from Lakes Ontario and Erie as of the early 1980s. At that time\, the Great Lakes-wide population had dropped to only 17 nesting pairs. Three decades of conservation efforts for the remnant population in the western Great Lakes pulled the species from the brink of extinction and has led to re-colonization of some eastern areas\, including Lake Ontario’s New York shoreline. New York has maintained one to two nesting pairs since its recolonization in 2015 despite many differences in habitat configuration from Michigan beaches\, where this species has maintained a stronghold. To help ensure that the species maintains its foothold in New York\, SUNY ESF has helped to lead partnerships among several federal\, state\, local and non-governmental organizations focused on monitoring\, research\, advocacy\, and nesting habitat restoration. These efforts have led to an increase in pair numbers\, fledglings\, and site use\, and in 2023 New York hosted three nesting pairs\, with individuals that we know have connections to nesting sites around the Great Lakes\, including the University of Minnesota’s captive rearing and release program. \nJonathan Cohen\, Ph.D. \nDr. Jonathan Cohen got his Ph.D. from Virginia Tech in 2005\, studying the breeding ecology of piping plovers on Long Island\, NY\, and he earned his master’s degree in 1998 from the University of Connecticut\, where he studied contaminant exposure to Greater Scaup in the Long Island Sound region. Dr. Cohen’s lab conducts research in support of conservation and management of wildlife\, with a focus on birds of conservation concern. His projects have included conservation of breeding Piping Plovers on the Atlantic Coast of New England and New Jersey\, the effect of human disturbance on Snowy Plovers in Florida\, Saltmarsh Sparrow nesting success in New York City\, the effectiveness of forestry practices at conserving songbird diversity in Pennsylvania\, and (his one mammal-focused project) habitat restoration for the New England cottontail. He has also been working actively with several partners to restore the Piping Plover to eastern Lake Ontario. \nLook for the Zoom link in your email a few days prior to the meeting. SUMMARY:Lake Shore Marshes East Wildlife Management Area
DESCRIPTION:Registration begins at 7:30 p.m. on March 4\, 2023\, and ends at 1:00 p.m. on March 10\, 2023. \nThis extensive driving tour of the large natural area to our northeast always turns up some great birds!  We’ll look for unusual ducks\, late winter birds\, and interesting migrants like Fox Sparrows. One portion of the trip is walking on a wide\, mainly flat\, sometimes muddy\, trail. Bring a snack to munch on to keep your energy up\, and dress for the weather! Restrooms available at Sodus Point Park and Chimney Bluffs State Park. \nMeet at 7:30 a.m. in Webster Plaza at the junction of Route 404 and Hard Road near Starbucks. SUMMARY:Hamlin Beach State Park
DESCRIPTION:Registration begins at 7:30 p.m. on March 11\, 2023\, and ends at 1:00 p.m. on March 17\, 2023. \nWe will gather at Braddock Bay Park and drive to Hamlin Beach State Park where we will look for waterfowl. On the way there\, we will look through fields for migrant waterfowl (Snow or other rarely seen geese) and lingering winter field birds (Horned Larks\, Snow Buntings or Lapland Longspurs). We may stop at Owl Woods in search of migrating owls if they have been reported that morning. \nWe will end at the Braddock Bay Hawk Watch in hopes of spotting Rough-legged\, Red-shouldered Hawks\, and Bald Eagles. Dress warmly as we will be out of the cars often at multiple locations–the lakeshore can be cold this time of year. Trails are flat but can be muddy/snowy. Waterproof boots strongly recommended. Restrooms available at Hamlin Beach only. \nMeet at 9:00 a.m. at the Braddock Bay Park main parking lot. Use the East Manitou Road exit from the Ontario State Parkway. SUMMARY:Beginner Birder Trip - Owl Woods & Hawk Watch Site
DESCRIPTION:Registration begins at 7:30 p.m. on March 18\, 2023\, and ends at 1:00 p.m. on March 24\, 2023. \nWe’ll look primarily for our smallest visiting owl\, the Northern Saw-whet\, which returns to this spot on a yearly basis. Long-eared Owls generally put in an appearance\, too\, although they’re quite shy and great at hiding. After the owl walk\, we’ll head to the Hawk Watch site to learn how to identify raptors on the wing. At this time of year\, we might witness spectacular flights of thousands of raptors!  The Owl Woods trails are flat and likely will be wet and muddy. Boots are strongly recommended – they’re almost mandatory! No restrooms available. DESCRIPTION:NEW! Eventbrite pre-registration for field trips has ended and is no longer available. \nThis will be an evening trip for woodcock courtship flight. If you’ve never seen this spectacle\, prepare to be amazed: birds call noisily (peenting) from the ground in grassy fields before spiraling rapidly up high\, making twittering\, kissing-like sounds at the apex of their ascent and descending silently back down\, only to start the cycle anew. An amazing sight! Fields may be wet and muddy. Boots are strongly recommended. Bring a flashlight or headlamp. \nMeet at 7:00 p.m. in the parking lot across from Owl Woods. Take the Manitou Beach Road exit from Ontario State Parkway. DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, April 13 \nProfessor Al Uy\nProfessor\, Department of Biology\, University of Rochester \nOn the Origin of Species on Islands: Exploring the Ecology and Genetics of Biodiversity in Birds of the Solomon Islands. \nAl Uy was born and raised in the Philippines\, moving to the US in his early teens. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of California at Berkeley\, and his doctorate degree from the University of Maryland at College Park. Before joining the University of Rochester in 2020\, Al held faculty positions at San Francisco State University\, Syracuse University and the University of Miami. For over 25 years\, Al and his team have explored the ecology and evolution of biological diversity\, working in Australia\, New Guinea and the Solomon Islands\, as well as Ecuador\, Panama and Costa Rica. During this field trip we expect to see at least 40 species returning to nest or on their way to northern nesting grounds. The Beechwood trip will involve about two miles of walking over mostly level ground (Port-a-john available) and will last until about noon. \nBring lunch if you plan to attend the second part of the trip to the Olga Fleisher Preserve (known locally as Huckleberry Swamp)\, a bottomland forest and wetland. Colorful warblers and other spring migrants arrive en masse at this urban oasis of tall stately trees. Pat will demonstrate birding by ear as we search for Yellow-rumped\, Black-throated Blue\, and Black-throated Green\, Nashville\, and Black-and-white Warblers among others. We will likely hear the flute-like Wood Thrush and see Hermit Thrushes searching the ground for food. Sparrows\, orioles\, and perhaps a Scarlet Tanager will make an appearance. Washington Grove can be one of the best spring birding spots in the area. \nThe entrances into the grove have two short steep trails\, the main trails are gentle hills. Eventbrite pre-registration for field trips has ended and is no longer available. \nTaylor Marsh is a preserve owned by the Bergen Swamp Preservation Society and located in Ontario County north of Honeoye Lake. It is best known for marsh birds\, including both American and Least Bittern and Virginia Rail. However\, the star attraction is the Sandhill Cranes that have been present in this area all year around for many years. They are occasionally heard at Taylor\, although seldom seen. Taylor also has brush-shrub and wooded upland habitat with a good variety of spring migrants and breeding birds. An adjacent hay field is home to Bobolinks and meadowlarks. It has a checklist of well over 100 species\, and we usually rack up 40-50 in just a couple of hours. \nThis is mostly a flat trail\, which can be muddy\, but has one small stream with steep banks to cross. Waterproof boots are advisable. No restrooms available. \nMeet at 8:00 a.m. at the Taylor Marsh parking area on the west side of Allen’s Hill Road just south of Nighan Hill Road. From Rochester\, take I-390 south to the Avon exit. Turn left onto Routes 5&20 and go east. In the town of Lima\, turn right onto Route 15 A and follow it south. Turn left onto Richmond Mills Road (Livingston County Road 41). It becomes Ontario County Road 15. Follow County Road 15 past County Road 37 and turn right at the next stop sign onto Allen’s Hill Road. This well-maintained trail is an established favorite for wildlife viewing and scenic views. Wear comfortable walking shoes. DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, May 11 \nLinda Ziemba\nWildlife Biologist\, Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge \nManaging Water Levels for Migrating Waterfowl and Shorebirds and Nesting Marsh Birds \nWildlife conservation is at the heart of the National Wildlife Refuge System. It drives everything we do at the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge\, from the recreational activities we offer to the resource management tools we use. While a visit to Montezuma can transport you deep into nature\, it is important to know that refuge habitats are continuously monitored and managed. We restore marshes by building dikes with heavy equipment to hold water\, and use water control structures to adjust water levels for optimum habitats within the marshes. Please join us as Refuge Biologist Linda Ziemba discusses how staff at the Montezuma NWR make water level management decisions for migratory and nesting birds. \nLinda Ziemba has been the wildlife biologist at the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge since 2006. Her passions are providing habitat for migratory birds and other wildlife and providing opportunities for people to work together as land stewards. She began her career in wildlife biology as a volunteer at E.B. In recent years\, Baltimore Orioles\, Rose-breasted Grosbeaks\, Scarlet Tanagers\, Pileated Woodpeckers\, Red-tailed Hawks\, American Woodcocks and Blue-winged Warblers have all nested there. \nThe trip will continue with a visit to the BANC Sanctuary on Railroad Mills Road\, where we’ll walk the trails around the woodland\, wetland\, and creek habitats. Nesting species there include Eastern Bluebirds\, House Wrens\, Eastern Phoebes\, and adjacent tree lines have produced a variety of migrating warblers. SUMMARY:Thousand Acre Swamp
DESCRIPTION:NEW! Eventbrite pre-registration for field trips has ended and is no longer available. \nThousand Acre Swamp is a preserve owned by the Nature Conservancy of Western New York. It has a bird checklist of 120 species. This level 2.5-mile walk on uneven\, sometimes muddy trails\, goes through varied habitats\, resulting in a variety of breeding bird species and migrants. The habitats include swampy woods\, drier woods\, a marshy area\, meadows\, and a pond. Shorter routes are possible. The entrance and parking lot are on the west side of Jackson Road opposite Penfield Center Road in Penfield. Boots and mosquito repellent are recommended. No restrooms available. SUMMARY:Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge

Eventbrite pre-registration for field trips has ended and is no longer available. \nWe will search for Prothonotary Warblers\, Yellow-throated Vireos\, Cerulean Warblers\, and other birds at this local natural treasure. This trip is a combination of driving and walking and includes a boardwalk\, forest trail\, and dirt road. Mostly flat but uneven trails. Length about 3.5 miles total\, walking. Port-a-john available about midway through trip. Meet at 7:00 a.m. at the Brockport Wegmans’ parking lot (restrooms available). For those traveling from the west: meet at the Upper Stafford Marsh Overlook near 5999 Albion Road\, Oakfield\, NY at 7:30 a.m. It is advisable to bring water and snacks or a picnic lunch since there may be no local resources and the trip may last into the afternoon. SUMMARY:Wyoming County Fields and Forest—New Compehner Farm

Eventbrite pre-registration for field trips has ended and is no longer available.   \nThis is a great opportunity to explore an upland region of northeastern Wyoming County including New Compehner Farm (6340 LaGrange Road Wyoming\, NY 14591). We will look for migrating and resident warblers\, a variety of native sparrows\, hopefully returning cliff swallows\, both oriole species and open country birds\, in a nice mixture of open fields and wooded habitats and bird friendly plantings. We will focus on locating several nesting species. This trip has a little of everything on a beautiful farm. Easy walking\, but will cover a mile or two; wear sturdy shoes. \nThe trip will last until noon.
