DESCRIPTION:Get started on your annual list!  We’ll look for winter waterfowl on the Bay\, then move to Durand-Eastman Park where we will stroll Log Cabin Road and Zoo Road looking for finches\, waxwings\, and resident birds. This trip is mostly on paved roads. \nNo restrooms available. \nMeet at 8:00 a.m. in the large parking lot next to the Outlet bridge on the west side of Irondequoit Bay Outlet (Irondequoit Bay State Marine Park). Dress warmly! SUMMARY:Little Lakes Christmas Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:This year marks the 124th count nationwide and the 72nd count for the area. The count date is Saturday December 30\, 2023. Birds seen during the count week of December 27th to January 2nd may be called in to the leaders for inclusion in the tally. \nThe center of the 15 mile diameter circle is the outlet of Hemlock Lake\, at the north end of the lake. The circle includes all of Conesus\, Hemlock\, Canadice and Honeoye Lakes and a large area to the north. The dividing line between the areas is the height of land between the lakes. It is important for the coverage in each of the five areas to be as consistent as possible\, year to year\, for meaningful evaluation of the count area. Your participation in this worthy endeavor would be greatly appreciated. New birders can be paired up with experienced birders. SUMMARY:Beginner Birder Trip – Nations Road
DESCRIPTION:Sharpen your skills on wintering hawks and Short-eared Owls. Other wintering birds such as Horned Larks\, Snow Buntings\, and Lapland Longspurs are often present. This trip is a combination of driving and viewing at stops along roads. Length about .5 mile walking along the road. \nRestroom facilities are not available except at Tops. \nBring binoculars. \nMeet at 2:00 p.m. at the Tops Plaza in Avon on Routes 5 and 20\, 2 miles west of I-390. If possible\, carpooling strongly advised. Dress warmly and in layers. SUMMARY:Niagara River (Joint trip with the Buffalo Ornithological Society)
DESCRIPTION:The Niagara River area is famous for the variety and number of gulls in winter. Join us on our birding venture along the Niagara River in both the US and Canada. We will start at Lake Ontario and work our way south to the Falls. Our focus will be on waterfowl and gulls\, including Bonaparte’s Gull and Little Gull\, with possible late migrating Common Tern\, with additional stops for Red-headed Woodpecker\, Black Vulture and late migrating passerines. \nThis is a joint trip with the Buffalo Ornithological Society. \nMeet at 9:00 a.m. at the large parking lot next to the swimming pool of Fort Niagara State Park Beach\, 1 Scott Avenue\, Rt 18F\, Youngstown\, NY.  Bring beverages and lunch for this is an all day trip. We will be crossing into Canada (as of October 1\, 2022\, all COVID restrictions were dropped). He now leads the Sanctuary’s research projects in the Arctic and is involved in several studies\, including the movement ecology of New World vultures and peregrine falcons across the Americas. He also oversees all of the associated graduate students studying raptor ecology worldwide. \nWhen he’s not monitoring the long-term American kestrel nest-box program or helping with the migration counts from the Sanctuary’s lookout\, JF can be found teaching statistics to Sanctuary trainees and enjoying life with his wife and two children. \nLook for the Zoom link in your email a few days prior to the meeting. SUMMARY:October Meeting in Person & via Zoom with Speaker Adriaan Dokter\, Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, October 12 \nAdriaan Dokter\, Ph. D.\, Research associate\, Cornell Lab of Ornithology \nAdriaan Dokter studies the seasonal migrations of birds\, from the continental-scale movements of species to the fine-scale behavior of individuals flying through the atmosphere. He uses weather radar networks as well as individual tags to address questions in migration ecology\, including when and where birds migrate\, when and where birds die within the annual cycle\, and how shifting patterns in mortality and recruitment of young birds cause bird abundances to change. He also develops software tools for biologists using weather radar as a tool in their research. \nAdriaan Dokter is an ecologist with a background in physics. His research bridges the disciplines of ecology\, computer science\, physics\, and meteorology\, addressing questions about the effects of global change on the distribution and seasonal migration of birds. \nAfter receiving his Ph.D. at the Institute of Atomic and Molecular Physics in Amsterdam\, Dokter studied animal movement during postdoctoral appointments at the Netherlands Institute of Ecology\, the University of Amsterdam\, and the Netherlands Meteorological Institute. He has a continuing interest in understanding the role of individual decision making as a constituent of large-scale movement patterns\, which he explored in individual tracking studies on dark-bellied brent geese (Brant) and Eurasian Oystercatchers. \nLook for the Zoom link in your email a few days prior to the meeting. DESCRIPTION:We’ll start off walking flat wooded and brushy areas of the park\, looking for thrushes\, sparrows\, and maybe a half-hardy warbler or two. After that\, we’ll stop by the lake watch to view ducks on the water and in flight\, learning about the lake watch process. SUMMARY:Ganondagan State Historic Site
DESCRIPTION:This trip has generated large species lists due to the many habitat types we will travel through. We will start from the parking lot to the longhouse and walk wide mown or packed dirt trails through the Meadowlark field and then head down through woods\, shrub land\, and wetland to an overlook in grassland. The round trip is 1.5 miles and includes some hills. After we reach the overlook\, those who wish can continue for another 2 miles on the narrower Seneca Trail through field and woods\, across County Route 41\, and along a wooded stream valley to the Bobolink field. \nRestroom facilities are available at the museum center at end of trip. \nMeet at 8:00 a.m. in the main parking lot off County Road 41 Boughton Hill Road. The parking lot is situated below the new museum at 7000 County Road 41\, Victor\, NY 14564. DESCRIPTION:The wide\, flat\, multi-use Brickyard Trail winds between Elmwood Avenue and Westfall Road in Brighton. With woods at both ends and ponds and marsh in the middle\, it provides varied bird habitat. We will walk the full length of the trail and back (1.7 miles) to look for migrating fall warblers\, kinglets\, sparrows\, wrens\, and finches. There might even be a late Green Heron hanging around. Dress for the weather. Insect repellent may be needed for the wooded sections. DESCRIPTION:This preserve includes about 240 acres of land that is made up of a variety of birding habitats. This results in decent birding lists throughout the year. The trails are well marked and maintained. However\, they do get muddy at times\, so appropriate footwear is recommended based on the weather leading up to the trip date. \nMost of the trails are flat\, but there definitely will be a bit of up and down trail climbing in some sections. SUMMARY:Conesus Inlet State Wildlife Management Area
DESCRIPTION:Explore this expansive wetland for Virginia Rails and Wood Duck families. We’ve seen eagles on a reliable basis\, Cliff Swallows and more. This trip is a combination of driving\, stopping at overlooks and short walks on dirt trails and dikes. \nLength about 1.5 miles of walking. Restrooms are available at the meeting place only. \nMeet at 7:30 a.m. at Vitale Park on Route 20A in Lakeville. The Park entrance is by the Lakeville post office on the south (lake) side of Route 20A and across the street from Smith’s Hardware. There’s a possibility of a trip extension to the Geneseo Airport area. SUMMARY:Barnhart's Camp and Keeney Swamp
DESCRIPTION:We will be birding as we drive (and stop) throughout the diverse landscapes of Northern Allegany County\, 20 minutes south of Letchworth State Park. Grassland\, woodland\, pond and swampland species such as Prairie and Mourning Warblers\, Eastern Bluebirds\, Indigo Buntings\, and maybe a bittern should be seen. This trip generally goes all day so we can see as much as possible! \nMeet at 7:30 a.m. at Shop N’ Save in Nunda on Route 408 where restrooms are available. Spotting scopes and FRS Radios would be useful. Lunch at Barnhart’s camp is a trip tradition–they grill the hot dogs!
