SUMMARY:NEW!!! Rush Riverside Refuge (in association with Rush Recreation and Parks Association) Field Trip - Registration Opens May 6\, 2021
DESCRIPTION:The town of Rush has recently acquired a new patch of land containing old-growth woods\, farm fields in various stages of succession\, and a mile of Genesee River frontage.  Join us as we explore this “new” birding spot.  Trails may be wet and muddy\, so waterproof shoes/boots are recommended. \nNo restrooms available. \nMeet at 8:00 a.m. at Rush Riverside Refuge on Rush-Scottsville Road (Route 251)\, west of the intersection with East River Road\, on the north side of 251.  Either park on Route 251 or in the Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum parking lot. \nCOVID-19 Policies and Procedures \nDue to the novel coronavirus pandemic\, the Rochester Birding Association is instituting the following procedures for all field trips. By registering for this field trip\, you acknowledge that you have read and will abide by these policies. \nRegistration Policies: \n\nAdvance registration through Eventbrite is required in order to attend the trip. NYS guidelines for the allowable number of attendees at an outdoor gathering change frequently.  Exact capacity limits will be determined on a trip by trip basis\, and they may be subject to change.\nIndividuals who did not pre-register will not be allowed to attend the field trip.\nShould you decide not to attend the trip\, we encourage you to cancel your reservation to make room for others. Canceling is easily done through the Eventbrite website; see your confirmation email for details.\n\nHealth Screening Considerations: \n\nFull contact information is required at registration\, in case contact tracing is requested.\nNo one who has a temperature of 100.4F or greater (without having taken any fever-reducing medications) should attend.\nNo one who has any COVID-19 symptoms (fever\, cough\, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing\, chills\, muscle pain\, sore throat\, or loss of taste or smell) should attend.\nNo one who has tested positive for COVID-19 in the past 14 days or who has been instructed to self-isolate or quarantine should attend.\nNo one who has been in close (within 6 feet) or proximate (same closed environment\, but greater than 6 feet) contact with anyone who has tested positive for COVID-19 or who has had symptoms of COVID-19 within the past 14 days\, should attend.\nNo one who has traveled or who lives with someone who has traveled to a country or state on the New York coronavirus travel advisory list in the last 14 days should attend.\nParticipants who test positive for the coronavirus within 14 days after attending a field trip are encouraged to contact the RBA.\n\nSocial Distancing and Safety Best Practices \n\nParticipants will be required to stay 6 feet apart at all times and wear a mask whenever they are outside of their car.\nParticipants that reside in the same household may share binoculars or scopes\, but we regret that otherwise optics cannot be shared. We realize this may be frustrating for those who do not have their own spotting scopes. To the extent possible\, we will choose birding locations that do not require advanced optics.\nParticipants are encouraged to keep hand sanitizer with them in case of accidental contact.\n\nWaive and Release from Liability: By registering for this field trip you acknowledge that you assume all risks and hazards incidental to the activities of the event\, including potential exposure to the novel coronavirus. Now ducks and chickens are together at the front of the field guide; falcons have landed next to parrots; our tanagers are grosbeaks; our seedeater is a tanager! But some of these taxonomic “surprises” wouldn’t have been so surprising\, if we had just been listening. This talk will show how the vocal repertoires of birds can reveal deep evolutionary relationships. Among other topics\, prepare to learn why warblers and sparrows are much more similar than you think; why the name of the Upland Sandpiper (once called Upland Plover) is still wrong; and what the heck a Yellow-breasted Chat really is. \nNathan Pieplow \nGrowing up in South Dakota\, I got started identifying bird songs by studying the classic “Birding By Ear” field guides in the Peterson series.  It wasn’t until 2003\, when I faced the frustrations of studying sounds for my first trips to Mexico and Costa Rica\, that I became dedicated to finding new and better ways to learn\, describe\, and catalog bird sounds.  Along the way I became a sound recordist and an amateur ethologist (a student of animal behavior). \nI’m not one of those superhuman beings who can identify every singing bird\, or discern the nocturnal flight call of a Blackpoll Warbler as it passes overhead in the dark.  My high-frequency hearing is getting worse every year\, and I don’t have a great auditory memory.  For me to learn bird sounds\, I wanted more resources: more recordings\, better glossaries\, deeper discussions.  So I set out to create my own resources.  The pages at www.earbirding.com are part of the result. The Peterson Field Guide to Bird Sounds is another part. \nI live in Boulder\, Colorado\, where I teach writing and rhetoric at the University of Colorado.
